How to know if my dog would accept a cat?

Hi, I grew up with cats and really miss not having some around the house. I would love to get one(or a couple!!) but I am unsure as to how my dog would be? I don't know anyone with a cat,so can't take my dog round someones house to see how he would react(and I dont always think this would be a true indicater anyway). How do other posters make the decision to purchase a cat if they have a dog?
He doesnt have a high prey drive. We have an open top guinnea pig cage and he just sits there watching them, occasionlly sniffing them when they are close enough:) But he is an absolute nightmare for chasing things iykwim? If a cat comes in the garden,he goes bonkers trying to chase it. But if we see a cat on the streets whilst walking him,and the cat stands his ground and doesnt run off, then our dog will start shivering and try and avoid the cat at all costsConfused Part of me thinks that if we brought a cat, it would only take one swipe on the nose and my dog would stay well clear:o but what if I'm wrongConfused He is a Chihuahua by the way,so any cat would probably be bigger than him anyway:o but does it sound like it could be a disaster in the making?? Thankyou in advance for any ideas or advice:)

Chihuahas may be small but they can have a towering attitude when they feel like it!

I can't advise, I'm afraid.

Yes he certainly has attitude!!! He's been known to have dogs the size of lurchers cowering in the corner in the past when they have made a pest of themselves, but he is all bark and no bite:)
