The litter tray

Can my cat and dog live in harmony?

We got our beautiful 2 year old cat in December from the Cats protection, she had a untreated broken leg and very very scared of everyone, we've had no problems with her she's settled in wonderfully and loves the DC, she does not like to sit on laps etc but is very loving and I have no complaints about her.
We brought home a 7 month old puppy on Thursday that is also a rescue and my poor kitty is refusing to come downstairs and just puffs up and attacks the dog which in turn tries to chase the cat, vicious circle. On their own both are the perfect animals, together they are horrendous!

Any advice would be great. I don't know where to post so have posted in here and The Doghouse.

I'd be fairly sanguine about them getting on eventually although a puppy might just be too rambunctious for her at the moment. (What breed is it?)

A safe place for her to go (which it sounds as if she has) lots of TLC for her and continuing discipline and training for the dog is the way forward, I think.

I reckon it will be OK. Most cats will exert dominance over most dogs if living together and two days is really not long enough to judge - the puppy will still be full of itself for finding a new place and won't calm down for a little yet.

Sorry - what breed does it look most like ? (I realize that a rescue pup might have a somewhat uncertain ancestry.)

Oh - and take her food and litter tray upstairs so that she can eat and use her tray in peace and feeling safe. The dog shouldn't be allowed up there and a stairgate would be useful for a few weeks if you could source one.

It took a good while but my cats now live in harmony with the dog. On occasion, they have even been seen curled up together. Sometimes Dog does forget himself and chase a cat when he is over excited but they are very adept at escaping from him.

We have a stair gate and the dog is not allowed upstairs, the cat doesn't use a tray as she goes out, the puppy is a Staff X.

The cat is currently snuggled up with DD upstairs. She slept in our room sat night on the end of our bed and was purring away.

The dog is very good but obviously being a puppy she's excitable.

Okey cokey - she's a terrier cross so I'd still supervise their interactions if possible while the dog is young and excitable. I think you'll be OK though as long as the cat has a safe place to retreat to to get away from the pup if she needs to. I'd put her food upstairs for the time being though. Puppies are voracious and it might spook her to have a pup descend while she's eating.
