He's 16 and I'm pretty good nick generally although I've noticed him looking a bit 'vacant' on occasions recently and in the last couple of weeks has started peeing/pooing in the house. I will be taking him to the vets for a check up but thought I'd ask on here as well.

I'm planning on getting a litter tray but am just wondering if this could be a touch of feline senility?

It could be a touch of senility but it's more likely that he's got to an age when going out to pee/poo seems too much trouble. It seems to be quite common. I'm sure a couple of litter trays around the house will solve the problem.

As thecatneuterer said. He's of an age now where he might have a touch of arthritis which would make digging and covering-over in hard earth difficult - and it's mighty cold out there right now which wouldn't help. Try a couple of trays.
