I'm cat sitting for the weekend, for my mum. Took said cat to ours where she could have free run of the utility room and large walk on aviary run. Cat was gone this morning, and must have squeezed out of a tiny gap inthe aviary.

I've called both the local cets as she's microchipped, have popped a sign up in the pet shop and let the local rescue know. Put a post on a local site and gave spent the last thee hours wondering around town, and walking to my mums house and back calling the cat carrying treats. Have seen 2 felines abd zero road kill cats.

I've left our aviary open, and have left treats there and at mums house. She's a good hunter, so can probably fend for herself.

Have let mum know, and she is saying don't worry and these thngs happen, but i feel awful. I son't thik she'll know how to get back here or home.

Thank you do much issey, thats reassuring. I thought there was no hope as we're across town from her home so she won't know her way back.

you would be surprised we moved from one part of blackpool to another part and the ruddy cat at the time went straight back to the old house she was brought back to us by the new people how she knew where to go i will never know as she went from one house to the other in the back of the moving van in a carrier and cats have quite a large range, ask your neighbours to check sheds and garages as if she has been spooked this will be somewhere that she would see as a safe place to hide

That's amazing. Will make some leaflets, luckily have discovered we are in a bit of a cat hotspot, as one of our neighbours leaves a food bowl out.

Snows coming tomorrow/monday, i'm worried about her being lost and cold :( just had a message to someone saw a small black and white in a shop car park, its not there now but got my hopes up. I have spent the whole day either walking the streets looking or watching out the window. Poor dd and dh have had very little attention from me. I picked this cat when i was a teenager. Keep crying and my world keeps shaking.

I know, it's 'just' a cat

Try not to panic. Cats often go missing for a few days and then end up back where they escaped from, even if they are unfamiliar with the area. The most important thing is to leave food in the garden just outside where she escaped from - don't rely on her being able to squeeze back in the way she came out. Make sure you leave food out every day for at least two weeks. Even if she doesn't know where she is the chances are she will just wander around a fairly small area looking for food and should end up finding the food in your garden. And of course notices through neighbours' letterboxes and on lamp posts are invaluable, particularly if, as you say, other people put food out.

And of course she is microchipped. I volunteer for a cat charity and just last week I was called to pick up a stray cat. It turned out she was chipped and the story was almost exactly like yours. Someone had taken their parents' cat to their house to look after while they were away, many miles from her home, and she had escaped. She had been missing for about 4 months (we don't of course know what the people who lost her did to get her back), but anyway, after four months, she was safely back in her original home and not really any the worse for wear.

Try emptying the contents if the Hoover bag by the open run door - the smell will be of your home and may help cat relocate.

I have lost and found many cats...

Good luck

Also get all neighbours to check sheds, garages etc and leave a note at all local building sites if nothing in 24 hours

Thank you, reassuring stories are great - we've left the aviary door wide open, food by the door and in her bowel by the back gate - getting a lot of local cat interest, have started to name them. There's not-PIL's-cat, not-cat (looks similar, but not), fluffy shortsocks, limpy black, marked face and pink ear.

Should it be my mums hoover contents? She was only here for 6-12 hours. Its her bowl from home that's outside, so that should smell good.
