The litter tray

I think my neighbour thinks I'm neglecting our cat

I think our cat has a good life. We took him in as a stray and after we couldn't find his family I had him neutered and vaccinated.

In the morning I get up at six. I feed the cat, refresh his water and after he does his business I clean his kitty litter. At lunch I refill his bowl, refresh his water and again after dinner I fill up his bowl, refresh his water and clean his kitty litter. He's not greedy and there is often food left in his bowl between meals.

I let him sleep in my bed and he gets lots of cuddles and attention during the day.

When I take the kids to school he always goes out. I call him back in but he prefers to stay out, sometimes I run errands so I can be gone an hour or two. When I get home sometimes he comes in and sleeps, sometimes he stays out to play.

The other day, I came home and I found someone had placed a cardboard box under our bench. It is lined with newspaper and the top has been partially taped over to make a bed. I mean, someone put effort into that box. I figured it wasn't doing any harm so I left it but today I came home and someone had placed a handful of cat food on our porch. This irked me a bit. Seriously our cat is well fed.

I have tried leaving a window open when we go out but he doesn't come in that way. Can't install a cat flap as house is rented (we paid an extra cat deposit). I really think he is fine out for an hour or two but I wonder if he cries when we are gone.

Sorry, I'm probably being a bit over sensitive but does anyone else think my neighbour (I guess that's who is doing it) is being a bit out of line or do you just think they are being nice?

Sorry, I think you are obsessed with your cat (didn't read further).

It's great that you take care of your animals.

Disclaimer - had two cats - mum and daughter - and never needed to empty the litter except about twice a week... (barring accidents)...

they always had fresh water and food though!

also had a guinea pig for 7! years

I would have a word with the neighbour if you're bothered. Is your neighbour elderly? Lives alone? Obviously they have too much time on their hands Grin I wouldn't worry too much though. The worst that could happen is they might ask RSPCA or Cats' Protection League to call and investigate and when the cat is looked at it will be apparent that it is not neglected. Smile

Disclaimer: I don't get up at six to feed the cat. I get up at that time anyway so feed him. That would be a bit mental.

But I don't know who is doing it. Our postbox is on our gate so whoever it is comes in through our garden to the door. It feels a bit weird.

I think our neighbour is obsessed with our cat. I'm wondering what will happen next. What if they try and sew his balls back in? Will they dress him up in little cat clothes?

Ok, I am crazy! I need to get out more!

You could always attach a polite note to the box saying thank you for looking out for my cat but please don't feed him, he has a special diet. Bit of a white lie....

Actually, I'm having a bout of very negative/paranoid thinking about this ... is there the slightest chance that someone is trying to befriend and take your cat? Is cat chipped and collared?

I'm sure this is just a mad brain- moment on my part ...

suburbophobe, doesn't the OP just mean that she scoops the mess out of the litter, rather than changing it multiple times a day? That's how read it anyway.

Seems a very random thing to take issue with.

Why don't you just ask your neighbour? Perhaps the cat is yowling and they have been concerned? Wouldn't be the first time a cat has done the whole "I'm cute and unloved poooooorrrr meeeeeee!" act for extra dinner and a comfy spot Grin

I too would leave a message on the box saying please dont feed, putting food through your letterbox? That would make me rather cross.

They are being nice. I'd pick your battles and know that you have someone who will feed him etc if you need them too.

They put a lot of time into building his box, and bought him car food. They are trying to be nice, not malicious.
