Update on Thomas (cat with hyperthyroidism)

Thomas has been on his tablets for three weeks now, and I took him back to the vets on Saturday for a check.
He has actually put some weight back on - not a lot , but as the vet said, it is better than continuing to lose weight.
I have another two weeks of tablets for him then will take him back again. The vet may possibly repeat the blood tests then to see if the tablets are controlling the situation.
Apparently his original blood tests showed a higher than expected reading for something to do with the liver. This could be due the thyroid problem.
The vet has discussed the possibility of operating to remove the thyroid but will think about that more after the next visit. Thomas is 14 and a half years old so I am concerned about him having an anaesthetic.
Has anyone ever purchased tablets for their cat on the internet. The tablets Thomas is on, Vidalta, are quite expensive from the vet, but I have seen them on the internet at a much lower cost

So fairly good news.

I have to say that I'm reluctant to buy meds on the internet. Just that I know that if I buy from my vet, I'm getting the real article. From the net - well, who can tell.

Seniorboy had a full GA procedure at 16 and came through fine. The vet had done a complete blood work beforehand and was pretty confident (as much as she could be - GAs are always problematic) that he would be OK with her team. It was possibly longer for him than a younger cat (they gave him lots of cared for recuperation time) and wasn't cheap - but he was well after it.

Yes, that had been one of my concerns about buying off the internet - whether I would get the real thing.
Will discuss on going cost with the vet, if tablets are to be a long term thing.

Always a good idea to discuss things fully with your vet.

Others may have different views on internet buying. That's just my very personal opinion.

Firstly buying from the Internet ensure the site is British, it must ask for a prescription ( which your vet can charge for).
Thyroid surgery - all these cats are old. There are risks with every GA , but vets do everything they can to minimise them. In good hands this surgery should only take 10-15 mins so your cat should only be asleep for 30 mins max a very short anaesthetic.
There are post op risks they should go through all of these though they are uncommon.

Sorry - When I say 'it wasn't cheap' - it wasn't second mortgage territory either. Say normal GA cost plus £100 or so.
