Missing cat has returned but ....

Charley went missing just under a year ago...searched everywhere, did leaflet drops etc, many sightings but no one could get him. We now have two females, both spayed. I thought I saw Charley last week, just a fleeting glance so wasn't sure. Then yesterday dh clearing out his works van, I was out there too and along comes Charley following one of my females :) I was patient, sat down near them as they laid together under a car then watched them following each other about. He did at one point lay in front of me, but I was worried about scaring him. He came back AGAIN about an hour later..went to follow our female into the house then she turned round and went back out !! So he sat on our front garden for ages...when I called him he would look at me but didn't make any attempt to come up to me or dh (he was Charleys fav :) ) I took lots of photos have compared them to when he was younger and the markings are exactly the same.
What do I do now?? I am eagerly waiting for him to pop up again hopefully should I attempt to approach him? Should I put his old bed out for him?? Any ideas?

Do you think he has a new home? Does he seem hungry?

You must have been Shock to see him. You may have 3 cats now.

Not sure, he doesn't look skinny, but his ears are all torn from fighting etc. He was a very capable boy, used to brings us baby rabbits home ! defo has fleas from the amount of stratching his did, no collar and still not neutered (he was 10 months when he left just before we were about to neuter him ), If I could just get him in the house, I can deflea straight away, book him in at vets and hopefully keep him in for a couple of weeks before letting him out again. He seems very at ease with my girls so hopefully it would work. Will just have to wait and see. I have a tin of tuna ready to be opened should I see him just to see if he will get close enough for me to pick him up and see how he reacts.

So frustrating. You must just want to dash over and grab him. Hopefully in time you will be able to get him.

feed him. leave a dish of tasty food out when you have seen him. tap the tin of food with a fork and let him eat at your back/front foor. hopefully it will kepp him coming back and eventually he will come inside and hopefully stay. although do remember that cats chose where they live and he might just prefer to go from your house to another and back again. really great that he came back though after a year. clever cat! I have a plate of food ready to leave out tonight, but no doubt one of my girls will eat it unless I lock them in, which I could do :) He is amazing but I do think he is being pulled back by his instinct rather than wanting to come back iyswim :) I just need to get him close enough that I can pick him up and see how he reacts. I have put his old bed out for him tonight, hoping he may pick up on the scent :) x

good idea about the bed. it doesn't matter why he is back, just that he is. it would do no harm to get a hold of him and deflea/worm etc. also, i would whisk him to the vet and get the works done, neutered, vaccs and microchipped. and then put a nice collar with his address on Grin

I had no sightings since Saturday, then today I came back from the shops and one of my girls came running up to me and there was Charley curled up on the front door mat right next to his bed...I was so surprised :) He moved as I approached but I blame dh for being too eager/clumsy :) however I went and put some food out and both my girls and him ate it together :) Then he went again :( ....however I am hopeful I will see him again now and shall try and grab him I think...I don't know what else to do now.

Oooh so near and yet so far, but progress. Smile I don't think it will be too long before you will get him.

I really hope you get him, I would keep putting food down for a couple more days before grabbing him. Wishing you lots of luck :)

I have put more food out tonight :) he knows it is there now and my girls will be in shortly for the night so they won't be eating it ! Funny thing is he always used to sleep on that mat by the front door when we were out and to see him there today was just so surprising but nice :) I have checked and double checked the photos I took today and on Saturday to photos before he wandered and the markings match exactly..I have no reason to think it isn't him.

Some cats are wanderers, unfortunately for us!

The first, second, third time my cat did what yours has done I was in bits, walking round the streets banging a tin of tuna calling him in. He is 8 now and has never spent more than a month at home at any one time [he generally moves out for the summer, and this winter was gone too as it was so mild].

I've reported him missing umpteen times, now I just accept he is the littlest hobo of the cat world and give him lots of love when he does come home as well as grounding him for 2 weeks to remind him this is home Hmm. Luckily he always is home around booster jab time of year Grin. He does the same thing quite often as your is doing, coming close but not quite in the house, although when we have friends staying on the sofa they report he often comes in late at night to eat Grin

We've moved house once and it didn't take him long to do the same thing here so it's not a particular house he's going to. His brother is the complete opposite, practically have to boot him out of the cat flap!

I've spoken to a couple of vets about it, as he is already neutered there's not much else to do really, you cat may have a similar outdoors-y nature, it's hard coming to terms with a part-time cat, I hope your Charley stays home x

i really hope you get him. i wonder where on earth he has been?

I am sorry your cat is a nightmare too :) I do worry about him but I can't force him home unless I can get close enough to him. I do wonder that even if I do manage to get him in that he may go again even after we get him neutered.
Saw him this morning but it was 7.30am and I was half dressed :) so left him alone (then the bin men scared him off with the stupid lorry) and not seen him any more today but it has been peeing it down ALL day.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow :)

Yes I was unimpressed with the bunnies, that cat also kills frogs and brings them in, I am non too happy with her when she does that either.

Ok I just saw him outside, he made his way all stealth like to our house, sniffed in the front door (which was open) ..during this time I got the left over tuna from the fridge. I threw a few pieces to him which he ate gradually throwing them nearer to me...he got to about 3 feet from me and wouldn't come any closer. It is quite apparent he hasn't had any human interaction for some time as he is very scared of me even though I was feeding him :( I think this may take some time, earning his trust, if I even manage to do that.

topknob it might be worth contacting your local Cats Protection branch. They have cages that they use to trap strays. They might be willing to lend you one.

My cat has been missing a year also but he had only been going out for a few weeks before he went missing so I've pretty much given up any hope of him coming back. But your story does give me a tiny bit of hope. I hope that you manage to catch your cat.

This evenings update, as I sure you are all eager to know lol :) Charley appeared across our Close in our neighbours garden so I used my girl as bait :) and carried her to where he could see her, he then followed her to our front door, were they touched noses :) I got a pouch of food I purchased for him had laying around :) and dh took it over him...he got quite close and put it on a plate right in front of dh, Charley came over to dh and ate it (v v hungry) he was a little nervous but happy to eat and get this :) dh even stroked him a few times :) :) he went and hid under the car after but it is a little progress !! I may be buying lots more pouches tomorrow :) lol x

great stuff, hope you manage to catch him very soon.

Perhaps you could get him neutered and keep him in a large pen for while so he can get to know you and trust you again.

If I get him in the house, he WILL get neutered ! My two girls sleep in the utility room which has a lockable cat flap so if he does come in he will be staying out there at night with them for a few weeks and in the house during the day. The girls know how to call at the doors to come in & go out so it is do-able.

Dh was close enough to just pick him up but we were both so nervous of scaring him we thought better of it...just got to give it time.
