Question about hard pad?

The kennels we are going to be putting our dog into have said that he needs to be vaccinated against distemper, parvo and hard pad. I thought hard pad was just another name for distemper? Am I being a bit dim here and it is a separate jab? Please help!

I've always known it to be another word for distemper aswell, but my old dog never needed it for kennels, they just asked that he was vaccinated for Kennel cough and brought proof with us

Strangely enough they don't require him to be jabbed for KC....thinking we may look elsewhere but still curious to know about this!

I'd look elsewhere if they don't ask for them have KC vaccination

Hard pad is the folk name for Distemper as far as I'm aware. I wonder if they just got mixed up and meant Parvo, Distemper and Lepto?

From what you've posted on this and another thread, they do sound a bit odd TooOld.

Is there anyone you local can ask for a recommendation? If not and you have a good relationship with your vets, I would ask them.

If I were you I'd visit a few before making a final decision. You can tell such a lot from a visit and you will usually get a good vibe from the right place. We spent ages a couple of years back visiting lots of local kennels hoping to find one nearer to our house, but couldn't find one that even came close to the place we use.

Only fly in the ointment might be that it's getting very late. Our kennels are booked up for the summer months in advance - in fact one year we lost out because they were already booked up by the previous Autumn. They only take bookings in excess of 7 days in the summer as well, as they're so busy they don't have to worry about turning people away.

That said, just because they're odd, doesn't mean they won't take good care of your boy. Some of the quirkiest 'dog people' I know are also the ones I'd be happiest to leave my dogs with if I had to.

Best advice is to trust your own instincts and ask around what other dog owners and the vet think about the place.

If this is the same kennel that charges extra for walks I'd definitely look elsewhere - do you not have a friend who could take him or could you book a kennel near where you are going instead of near you .

Yes it is the same kennel who charge for walks Hmm

Have spoken to the lovely woman who runs the doggy daycare that Bob sometimes goes to, she has recommended two places where she has kennelled her lurcher in the past, so will be giving them a call.

I agree, we have left it too late moose. We didn't expect to be going away anywhere at all and this was offered out of the blue!

If you were near me which I don't think you are I would of recommended my kennels, when my mastiff went there he had to be kept away from dogs and strange people due to aggression, they were lovely and walked him when the other dogs were being fed by himself, they also put him in a block by himself and left the cage door open so he go for a stroll in the block and get used to then, they were fab with him and he didn't want to leave at the end of the 2 weeks as he'd made a friend that worked there Shock but there walks we're included in the overall price but you had to bring your own food and medication if required. Think we paid £180 for the two weeks which included an hours walk in the morning and 40 minutes in the evening, would highly recommend themSmile

hard pad is one of the clinical signs of distemper.(footpads become thickened with some strains of the disease) so distemper is often known as hard pad.

Sounds like you might be better off looking for a different kennel tbh.I would assume all kennels walk the dogs in their care as stnadard!and not lob on an extra fee for it!

Well we have found and booked a lovely kennels on the recommendation of the daycare owner I mentioned above. Wish we could take him with us but I think he will be OK here, only 10 kennels in total so not a huge busy place, lovely location, genuine doggy people and two walks a day are included in the cost, oh and no mention of 'hard paw'!

Thanks everyone Flowers

That's great news TooOld. Always best to go on a recommendation and you obviously got the right vibe/gut feeling from the people that run it too, which is great.

I'm sure he'll have a blast - my two always do.

Now try to relax and enjoy your holiday. Smile
