Camping tips!

Going camping for the first time soon, with 3DC and 2 border collies. Large tent, area for the dogs. They are only 14 months so still a little giddy and unreliable, but very good natured.

Anything I need to take/know/do/not do?!

A crate. You need to be able to focus on cooking/tent building/other chores without worrying about the dogs.

You can get leads that attach to screw in pegs, so the dogs have limited freedom but can't wander as far as other people's barbecues and sausages.

You'll need screw in tie out mounts and cables to use on site and windbreaks are really useful for creating your own front-garden type space where the dogs can relax without getting over-stimulated by all the comings and goings on the site.

Remember that even if tethered inside the tent, unless you have zig they can burrow out under the side of the tent - which usually causes much amusement for any children on site, but is probably best avoided - I learned that the hard way.

Brill. We do have one of those screw in pegs and a wind break so I'll make sure we set that up.

The corkscrew type pegs - a couple at least so you dont have to keep moving them. We had our springer on a retractable lead once but this was not a good idea as she would run round us and then pull leaving rope burns on our legs or just trip us up. The cable ones are much better.

It's going to be ok - dogs love camping as they get lots of walks followed by being able to lie around outside with their favourite people close by.

We avoid large campsites and search out the ones with max 10-12 pitches. They do tend to get booked up ridiculously early though, so you need to plan ahead.

The only times we've ever had inconsiderate neighbours was when we had no choice but to use a large, commercial site.

Well I'm here. Night one done!
Very busy new campsite. Dogs are behaving incredibly well. A few woofs at a nutty Spaniel who is allowed to run around off lead, but quiet when told.

Pleased so far! The screw-in spike is a godsend.
