Heartbreaking - our old boy was PTS today

Had our beautiful 16 yr old Vizsla PTS today. It's so heartbreaking. He was just old and had gone downhill rapidly over the past 2 weeks.
Although old age changed him, I still keep expecting him to bounce through the door or to hear his claws padding along.
Have to deal with decluttering now...all his treats and paraphernalia.
This is so hard.
Thanks for reading.

I'm right there with you. Our darling died 2 weeks ago.
Do NOT throw out all his stuff though, put special things in a plastic bag and put them out of sight, you WILL want to look at them, sniff them and cry on them. Are there any neighbourhood dogs that could inherit his treats? Imagine his horror if he saw them go in the bin!
Two weeks along I now know she's not in the other room, but she should be. It feels like a terrible mistake and she'll be back.
I can't believe that I'll never see that wonderful face I knew so well again, and all I have left are (admittedly awesome) memories and photos. I miss her so much, this doesn't feel like my house anymore.

For the meantime I recommend rum, diazepam, lots of tissues and whatever you need to do whether that's crying in a ball or screaming into a pillow. Getting outside helps but be prepared for the shitness of going home to a house that doesn't have him in it. At the minute I'm no longer crying several times a day and am startin to remember her, rather than her death.
link that might help
And this

I'm sorry for your loss (hug)

I'm so sorry for your loss, it's always to soon isn't it. Sounds like your gorgeous boy had a wonderful life.

Take your time to cry and grieve.

So sorry - it is awfully hard. We made up our minds quite quickly to get another dog, so I didn't have to deal with the paraphernalia, which I'd been dreading. But it did occur to me that a rescue might make good use of them and that might feel less bad than binning.

Thanks folks. Day 2 and am feeling a bit better. It helps to know others understand.

That is a lovely link, EvenBetter. Thank you for that.

Our lovely jakeyboy was PTS in May and I still miss him so I know and can empathise. It's bloody awful. We got another spaniel in August and he's stopped me from bawling my eyes out. We've kept all our dogs things and it does help to go and touch them from time to time.

So sorry x

Hi Green, we had our greyhound PTS on the same day as you. It's horrible and so, so hard. It just feels like there's a big blank hole in our house now. Thinking of you - so sorry. Flowers

I am too sitting here crying on and off as yesterday I came home from work and found that my little 15 year old Jack Russell had passed away, while I was out Sad
Even though I have another dog the house feels so quiet, I miss her funny little waddle as her legs were not good and her snoring and barking. I have another old boy to look after but now I'm worried for him as he is also old.
Clicked on the link above in EvenBetter post but that started off tears again Sad At the moment I am absolutely devastated even though I knew she was old and wasnt herself yesterday morning. These little dogs give us so much unconditional love but its so sad when they go , hugs to others who have lost their lovely animal friends xxxxx RIP little Tazzy you were one in a million

I'm still sad about my lovely mistledog who had to be pts last October due to bone cancer. We got mistlehound at the end of October - we have a DS (8) and felt it was important particularly for him to get a new one to take away some of the pain of losing our old dog so quickly (3 wks from initial limp) as she'd always been part of his life. Despite mistlehound, even DS sometimes has a bit of a tear up thinking of mistledog.. but then mistlehound tries to lick his face and it passes. I do remember much more of the good times than her end now which is good.

That's lovely, Chrissie. Thanks for sharing.

I'm sending love and thoughts to all of you who have lost furry, loved ones in recent times. RIP mistledog, Tazzy, Jakeyboy, EvenBetter's gorgeous darling girl, leylandi's lovely dogs, Errol's beauty and Jesusinthecabbagevan's beautiful greyhound.

It really helps to know I am not going through this alone.
