Dog proof flooring for kitchen/dining room - any tips?

This my first post but i've been lurking here for a while!

We've just had an offer accepted on our first ever house. It's a bit of a wreck and needs new flooring throughout (as well as new everything else!)

We'd love wood or wood look flooring downstairs but I'm not sure if anything can cope with our dog! He's an ex rescue collie/Dalmatian. He's generally calm but very reactive to anyone coming to the front door. He'll run at full pelt to the door then back to the window.

We run and walk with him on pavements so his claws aren't too long.

He is 8 now so I'm also worried that if the surface is too skippy he might struggle in a few years.

Any advice or experience of wood v laminate much appreciated. Also has anyone tried bamboo flooring?

We had ceramic tiles in the kitchen.

Our laminate was delaminated very quickly. We have one solid wood floor that we keep rugs down on but still have to strip, sand and revarnish due to wear and because we use disinfectant that eats wax.


Ceramic tiles have been our friend - underfloor heating and slightly textured for grip still came in cheaper than maintaining/replacing a wood floor. And it's bliss to clean.
We have more than one dog though and sometimes have pigs and goats walking over it so not exactly comparing like for like .

I would say avoid laminate entirely but would be really interested to hear about bamboo flooring?

Thanks both! I'm tempted by tiles but the cost of installing underfloor heating is making me hold out for a wood solution! Plus we'd like to have the same flooring in the living room too as we have a perminantly malting dog! I don't mind occasional sanding, re varnishing but I can see him ruining the patch where he sits on postman watch very quickly.

Bamboo is apparently harder than hardwood and sandable but i don't know anyone who has actually used it so I'm going on manufacturers views...

I have bamboo click lock flooring. Looks like wood, but a third of the price. Mobile mop likes to hurtled across it legs pinning in two years he has not managed to scratch it.

That would be spinning legs. I am super pleased with it. New house will have it through out ground floor.

Karndean is quiet, warm and hard-wearing if a bit pricy!

Another recommendation for Karndean. You can put a rug down on the bits he's likely to skid on.

We have a wooden floor in the sitting room and our dog is like a cartoon dog when she runs on it and usually comes to a skidding halt in a tangled heap. The rest of the down stairs has porcelain tiles which are textured and they cause no problems at all. I don't find them cold at all.

I have wood effect karendean and my dog manages fine on it, easy to keep clean and she hasn't scratched it running to the door when someone comes in.
