Went to see Kenny, a small staffie, 2yrs old been in foster care with a family with 2 children 2yrs girl, 3yrs boy. No barking on greeting, a bit of straining at his collar, but no real jumping up. As soon as I sat down he plonked his bum on my foot, his head in my lap and gave me a big 'love me then' gaze.

The fosterer said it's going to break her heart for him to go; he is so special. She has no concerns about her children being in another room with him, all he wants from anyone is cuddles. He doesn't bother with their toys, will happily share his bed with them, they can lie on him whilst watching tv (the littlies obviously!). Is obviously not at all territorial.

He doesn't mind being left but can't cope with being contained, the very first time she left him, in a crate, he broke out and cut his nose all up. But if you leave him with the run of the house he doesn't do any damage or chew, he has never had a toilet accident. He sleeps in his bed in their bedroom and then has the big dog cushion out of his bed as his downstairs bed during the day. Will sit, bed, paw on command. Doesn't pull on the lead, just wants to be by your side and soak up the love. Once you stop fussing him he just goes and lies down. The first visit to the vet to be chipped and castrated they put him in a small kennel and he became so distressed that within half an hour he had chewed the fur off the tip of his tail Sad. She collected him and let him calm down and a few days later she didn't drop him off til they were ready for him and he was fine. Wouldn't tolerate the non-lick shade, lasted about 3 seconds, but wore a pair of her sons pants quite happily for a day or so!

She said if you can cope with the snoring and the farting he's a perfect pet! (Let's just say he will fit in well in our house!!!) My son and dh need to meet him now but I am 100% confident that they will love him too, he is so exactly what we wanted and needed in a dog. Will keep you posted, will hopefully pick him up on Tuesday once he's had his stitches out. Grin

He sounds lovely, great that he's been fostered so you can feel confident about how he is around people/children etc. Hope it all works out well - sure the rescue are excited about rehoming a Staffie, they all seem to be bursting at the seams with the poor things

Such good news, keep the updates coming! I've had my rescue 4 months and we've hit some highs and rather more lows than I was expecting! Safe to say it's been a bit of a rollercoaster and we're not there yet. However, when asked by one of my DC who wasn't there why we chose him I got all sentimental. He has driven me to distraction, despair, defeatism and back again. But despite all that I would choose him again because the journey continues to be so rewarding and I luffs him so much Grin

I put my staffers onto orijen food and only get gassed a couple of times a day instead if the toxic gas that hung around and choked us.

thanks for all your good wishes. gymmummy 64 I reasoned myself that at the moment he is on best behaviour and am assuming that when he 'finds his feet' we will have some ishoos - tell me more about yours, it sounds challenging.

Well, he is the most adorable, gorgeous stinky arsed dog in the world!!! He is no oil painting, farts like a trouper and periodically snorts like a pig, but we couldn't be happier!!!!

It is so lovely to have someone be so pleased to see you 30 seconds after they saw you last. He follows my ds around as though he is his long lost buddy, which is so good for my ds who is an only and has had some serious anxiety issues lately. His tails wags round and round helicopter fashion, which we think might be some sort of 'fart fan'.

He is just such a soft pile of pudding, wants love and cuddles all the time, is really anxious to please. Man I am so in love. He has weed and poohed in the right place, all except one accident. He slept in his bed in dh's room and only got up when ds did at 9 this morning. He doesn't beg for food, he stays off the furniture with occasional very penitent attempts (I'm gonna do it but with such a sorry look on my face coz I know I'm not supposed to I'm hoping you'll feel sorry for me...what...really? You don't? I've really got to get off here and get on my sheepskin covered beanbag 3mm away from here? You're heartless!!!)

What can I say he is such an unbelievable addition to our family, I am unutterably glad that I took the advice of all you good mumsnetters and got a rescue and not a puppy - it's a match made in heaven. I can't tell you how grateful I am.

How fantastic!! You wouldn't have been half so relaxed with a manic puppy rushing around, biting with needle-sharp teeth, pooing and peeing everywhere. I know they're adorable but there's a lot to be said for a grown up companion! He sounds gorgeous... so glad it's working out so well for you Grin

So, an update. Things are unbelievably fab. Kenny is a complete treasure. He is now settling in and beginning to realise that he is part of our family and we won't be abandoning him. He goes most places with us, sat up in front in the van between ds and dh, sometimes with his head on a respective knee.

Still working on his manners on a lead, although for less than 2 weeks he is doing tremendously. He loves to play fetch down our alleyway, and drops the ball beautifully, and waits patiently for you to throw it. he has also learned that he can't strain at the lead and go out of the door or into the van like a bullet out of a gun, that he needs to wait patiently for the humans to do so first.

He is the most affectionate, adoring, gorgeous dog I could possibly have imagined and I continue to be so grateful to you lovely mumsnetters for putting me right about the idea of a puppy. Kenny is so right for our family, it is a match made in heaven. There is a pic on my profile, but there is a bloomin great watermark right on his face so you don't get the full gloriousness of Kenny, but you do get the idea. (Any hints on how to resize pics gratefully received!!).

He's gorgeous. My ex had a staff as a teenager and he moved in with us into our first home. He was a gorgeous, troublesome, hugely affectionate and soft pain in the arse. We had to have him pts around 18 months ago when he was thirteen.
My biggest memory of him was taking him for walks next to corn fields near our home. We would take out neighbours springer with us and the springer would jump around like a lamb in the corn while our staffy would thunder through it flattening it as he went whilst grunting and snorting and weeing cos he was so excited.
He used to lie in the most unimaginable positions and snore like an absolute hog.
I miss him, so please you have found such a lovely dog and that he has found you x

Ahhh you rescued a staffy Grin

I'm so happy Grin

The snoring is amazing isn't it?

Honestly I'm so so pleased, I always love to see a gorgeous staffy find a forever home. They are as soft as marshmallows aren't they?

I now have 3. Who like to be less than an inch away from us at all times.

Report
dandycandyjellybean · 25/01/2013 08:41

Tantrums...yes taking me a while to get used to the 'like to be less than an inch away' thing, keep stepping back and treading on the poor love!!!! It's lovely to keep finding a head in your lap the second you sit down though.

Wereonourway, yes when in the mood he thunders everywhere, he's like a runaway train. Don't have to put up with the snoring dh has him in his room at night coz he says the snoring and farting reminds him of me Grin but the periodic pig snorting is the most adorable thing EVER. It still makes me laugh every time he does it, and he does it a lot!

But the total best bit is how much he adores ds, and ds him. It is giving him so much confidence and it's really beautiful to see.

yay staffies, up with staffies!!!
