Erm, just say no and correct him/pull him away when he does it?

Mine don't dig unless I need help, e.g., planting a tree and am too lazy to shovel a deep hole, then dog comes in to help. Otherwise they know not to dig. Can't remember doing anything specific except saying no when they did it and they stopped doing it.

They still like to dig sometimes though, either when we are out for a walk or in our fields, but not in the garden area, so they must have gotten the message.

Agree, just keep saying no and pull him away. And don't leave him on his own in the garden till he's 100% reliable. It's a long slog but works in the end, last summer my then 1yr old lab's favourite game was uprooting everything, he also loved emptying plant pots and destroying the plants in them. He was OK when I was there but the minute I went inside he'd be at it so I realised I couldn't let him out on his own till he was trained. He's fine now and leaves everything alone even when I'm not in the garden.

Forgot to say - when he was nearly trained I tried leaving him in the garden on his own, and watched from bedroom window. As soon as he went near a plant pot I bellowed "NO" . It was so funny, he jumped and looked round but couldn't see me, ran away from the plant and sat by the back door. So now he probably thinks he's being watched all the time.

Some dogs love to dig. We have a small area in our garden where they are allowed to dig. In the summer especially they dig a hole and love to lie in it. It is out of sight so no trouble or eyesore. When they started to dig in the wrong place we moved them to the correct area "told them go dig" = happy dog and unwrecked garden.
