The doghouse

She's allowed to protect her bum, right?

We had an unfortunate incident with a beautiful white husky the other day.
Out walking with dog and DD when along came this beautiful white husky. Both dogs off lead (yes, I know, both should've been on lead).

Just so happened that dogs were under a bridge on a narrow path, next to canal, when encounter happened. They were both friendly enough to each other until my dog decided that she'd had enough of the other dog smelling her bum. She gave a warning bark, husky jumped in fright, took a step back and fell in the canal.

We managed to get the dog out no problem and no harm done.
My dog wasn't being aggressive, she was just saying "leave my bum alone!", which I happen to think she is entitled to do.

Am I wrong? Am I being naive?

I think your dog was within her rights to give a warning bark. At least it wasn't your DD that fell in the canal and you got the other dog out OK. Our dog growled at the canal the other week as he stepped back and put his foot in it (nearly fell in) after a dog gave a warning bark at him, had me and the other dogs owner in hysterics Grin

Sounds perfectly acceptable. Unfortunate geography is all.

Why do you say your dog should have been on a lead? I agree the husky should have been, on the basis that, from what I have heard from husky owners, they are known to have terrible recall and to be dog-aggressive (and after two nasty experiences with the same off-lead husky Angry ).

I think it was just one of those things. Certainly you or your dog aren't to blame!

Sounds find to me! No harm done. I like Huskies but the two I know from walking my lab both have dreadful recall. One will suddenly race off and go for miles on his own and the other (different owner) has no recall at all! Is that a husky trait? Both are gorgeous dogs, nice nature and friendly but terrible at recall.
I don't think you have anything to worry about and you are allowed to walk your dog off lead as long as he has recall and does not bother anyone else. Smile

Dogs learn the social niceties by other dogs telling them to back off or pack in what they are doing.

This isn't aggression, it is her enforcing her personal boundary.

Yes, it is a husky trait. Siberian huskies should never be allowed off lead because they will just run off. They might not run off instantly, but when the right moment presents itself (squirrel?) they will be gone, and they can run a long long way! It's still important to train them for recall, in case of escapes, but all the breed clubs say they must always be on lead.

OP, from what you describe it sounds like your dog was within its rights to tell the husky to back off, and they husky was a bit skittish.
