The doghouse

What would make my normally sensible dog rolla round in a pile of dog poo

Out for a walk, he was off the lead and he jumped - literally, feet of the groundand everything into a pile of dog in long grass and started rolling around in it. I had to take him home and wash him in the back garden! he wasn't happy, me even less so. he's never done this before

Was it fox poo? Every dog I have ever known has rolled in fox poo.

Don't know why.

Another pile of dog poo is mild, mine loves fox poo. Now that really does stink.

I have no idea why they do it though, daft creatures.

It was definately dog poo, unless fox poo is identical to dog poo. He stank, i ahd to walk through the village mortified Grin

Sheep and cattle poo are popular with my border collie. My old mongrel favoured dead rat.

Supposed to have something to do with disguising their own scent when hunting.

it'll have been fox poo, almost certainly!

we get a warning with Keller as he goes nose straight to the ground and circles it in preparation, so a good loud shout will distract him, but my parents doberman was like yours....on it in a heart beat!

dirty wee beasts!

I too think fox poo. One of mine has rolled and eaten human poo which I found even more disgusting. Yellow dog has never rolled in anything, ever.....just pisses on whatever the other one has tried to roll in....

My mind is kind of boggling, Labradorlover! Don't want to ask.........

Hmm, well, rolling behaviours are normally to deposit the scent of the (rolling) dog i.e. to mark their territory.

Pooing can also be a territory marking behviour - the anal glands coat the poo in the scent of the (pooing) dog/fox.

Perhaps your dog is rolling in it in an effort to 'cancel out' the scent of the fox and mark it as his territory? Perhaps he is trying to pick up the scent of the fox to try to track it? Confused

If it was fox poo - a quick tip. Just washing often doesn't get the smell out. Keep a bottle of cheap tomato ketchup under the sink. Coat the offending area in it, rub in (like shampoo) then wash off as normal.

I don't know why it works - but it does!

That just brings a whole new meaning to "picking up a scent" :o

Sorry

Salty, do you want my two? Buggers do it EVERY time we go out. Tesco Lavender wipes help.
