I can't for the life of me work out why...

She is a catalan sheepdog x australian shepherd. We got her at 9 weeks old and crate trained her from day 1. she cried and needed to be let out in the night for a bit, but it got less and less, and she has been going to bed at 11pm and getting up at 7am for about 4 months, maybe a bit more. Nothing has changed, her food and routine are all the same, she has regular walks of up to 2 hours a day, but at least 1 hour a day.

The past 2 weeks she has been waking in the night, anywhere between 2 and 5am. She just will not stop..starts whining...she gets louder and louder until she is full scale barking the place down. I have tried ignoring her. I have tried letting her out for a wee but not paying her attention, but she gets back into bed and starts again when I have got back into bed. She sleeps in the utility room in her crate where she always has. She likes being in her crate and it has never been used as a place of punishment. It is her safe space. This morning she started at 2am and I just stood outside the utility and when she was making a noise shouted 'no' and she stopped and went quiet til 7. I am drained.... my kids are better at sleeping than my dog!!!

Any ideas anyone?

Sometimes a dog gets lonely. Ours who far preferred their baskets would very very occasionally be found lying just outside or inside my bedroom in the morning. Not disturbing or needing anything more than being nearby. lamost always only one of them would be there, leaving the other/s in their baskets. Maybe she had a bad dream? Who knows? Dogs don't make trouble unless they are troubled.

she is destructive if left to her own devices though, so letting her wander at night isn't really an option....don't really want her in my bedroom either to be honest.

I've never met a dog that preferred someone else's bedroom to theirs. So I reckon you're safe there.

However, she is 9 months old. And will learn what you want her to learn. If you think shouting 'no' at her is the right thing, then you're her owner and she will learn what you teach her.
