The doghouse

I thought my dog was about to die today....and if she had it would have been my own fucking stupid fault :(

On a walk and let her of the lead, she went to fetch her ball and then collapsed and just lay on the path. I said to a wonderful lady who stopped with me that she had been running this morning already and then her legs had given out and she had to sit down for 20 minutes.

The lady asked was her collar to tight or did she have a heart murmer. I undid her collar checked her throat and eventually she perked up so I decided to take he home and call the vet.

Off course I watched her closely on the way home and she started looking odd again. It was her collar. I could barely get my finger under it. We went the rest of the way home without it.

A catch had broken on it, so every time she pulled on the lead or moved it was working tighter and tighter, slowly strangling her Sad

I have no excuse. You should check your dogs collar fits regularly, I know this. My laziness and complacency caused her to collapse, unable to breathe.

Thank you.

I wouldn't normally start a post in here scared, but I get bloody cross when people are feckless with their animals and now I go and do it myself!

At least it might remind others to check their dog is comfortable and safe.

She's Ok now ... she's certainly now well enough to hover hopefully in the kitchen as she can smell sausages cooling on the kitchen bench Hmm

Gosh how awful. I'm glad she's okay now. Thanks for the post to warn us all to check on our dogs' collars.

Crikeyblimey how awful for both of you, so glad she's ok now. Will make sure I check the dog's collar regularly, he's such a woolly monster long haired beauty I can barely see it most of the time.

Oh bless her - and you, ultimately it was something that you wouldn't have thought to look for (I know I wouldn't)

That's it though, it's one of the things you know, but only really do when you are fitting a new collar or they slip it.

Still she seems ok now, dh has brought her home a new cushion for her basket as present because Mummy tried to kill her so she's looking very pleased with herself.

At least you found out now and out walking. Mine don't wear collars unless walking so are fitted once or twice a day.

horsey - neither does mine, it must have totally broke as it fit when I put it on. My mistake was not checking the condition of the collars itself. I spoke the the Lady at the pet shop today and she said that the manufacturer states the fabric collars should be replace after a couple of years, but they don't advertise this fact on them when you buy them.
