The doghouse

Jumping up at the kitchen worktops.

Has anyone successfully stopped their dog from doing this. It is becoming very tiresome.

We literally cannot leave anything on the kitchen sides, not even pushed to the very back. We cant even put anything on the window sill. Dog can jump so far to the back of the kitchen side she can reach even there.

It's not even just food. She takes the oven gloves, tea towels, newspapers, anything paper actually, recycling - anything. We can't leave any sponges or cloths in the sink as she'll even take them. She takes the DC's plastic cups out of the sink. Nothing is sacred.

She constantly licks the kitchen sides even if its been sprayed with cleaner or bleach!

I dont know what to do. She will never do it in front of us, only once we've left the room but its ALL the time.

We try so hard not to leave anything within reach but the next step is to put absolutely everything in cupboards. She has even chewed all the knobs on the oven.

Keep her out of the kitchen perhaps? A gate on the door?

We thought about that but when we arent home the only room she can go in is the kitchen. While we're home if we see her slink off towards the kitchen we'll redirect her but while the DC's are eating or we're at the table having a meal she has to be shut away otherwise she'll beg for food. Her bed is in there too so if she wants a sleep she'll go in there but she seems to be quite stealth in waking up without us hearing her Grin

We tried leaving her in the hallway at night. Spent a whole day moving the furniture out and shoes and coats out the way, basically dog proofing it. In the morning she'd chewed/scratched the stairs. It's not our house so damage needs to be kept to a minimum.

Trouble is, the older she gets (8months) the worse she gets with chewing. We didnt have any problems with chewing until she was about 5-6 months and it just gets worse so the kitchen is a safe place for her to be when we're not around as other wise I may find she's eaten all my furniture!

I too will be keen to see an answer for this. We do our best to keep everything off the sides and to keep her out of the kitchen, but should DH we forget, she'll get it. Never when we're around - she does know she isn't meant to. We've had lots of broken crockery. She's quite small but she can jump ridiculously high.

What breed is she? She's probably teething at the moment. What do you give her to chew? A Kong filled with peanut butter/other yummy stuff is good, or a big raw bone.
If she is getting enough exercise and training, she might enjoy the refuge of a crate. One of our dogs used to leap up onto the worktop and eat whatever was cooking. These days she just raids the fridge at any opportunity!

My parents' car was written off by a dog chewing it. All the seats and the steering wheel went. Dogs can achieve some serious house wrecking!!!

She is a Dalmatian. We have an older girl too and she is fine with this. They are both very well exercised and fed.
She has toys and kongs and tugajugs etc. She will leave these laying around while she trys to steal things. Even if its full of cheese and other smelly tasty treats.
Crate is a no go for her. We tried when she was a puppy. Did everything right, never shut the door on her etc but they really stress her out.
Our older Dally just looks at her like Hmm she doesnt see why she puts in so much effort for what sometimes is just a scrap of paper!

She sounds like a very clever dog Smile When I was growing up we had a Cocker Spaniel that figured out how to move the dining room chairs so that she could jump up on them to gain access to the table Shock. She wasn't looking for play-things though....just food!

Try putting backing sheets slightly overhanging the edge of the kitchen counters. When she jumps up to nick something, she'll knock them over with a clang and scare herself. We're doing this atm for our Lab who is very teenagery and has forgotten his manners. Can't even list all the stuff he's eaten.
