When the dinners started at our school the little children were crying. My DS hated them at first 2 but now he loves them says that the meat melts in his mouth He still thinks that Jamie Oliver cooks his dinner everyday.

Nora is the real life Mrs Doyle.

Think we should start a fan club.

Great

He has a huge job though!

It's horrid all that garbage the kids are eating every day, and for many it'll be their only hot meal a day! Scary even.

Need more money for food, more money for the cooks, and a ban on junk food and chips.

Maybe it should run more like a liot of private prep schools - all children have to stay for school dinners, and choice is limited with no access to the cardboard burgers, etc.

It's all about re-educating them really. If they live on chips and beans at home (but obviously not your kids xena) then what do we expect. Not easy. Mine would probably prefer to eat junk all day. I don't so I win and they don't lol

Feel REALLY sorry for Mrs O in all this, a complete bum end of the deal. Just kept imagining her dealing with 2 sick and young kids at home whilst he was doing his stuff.. His motives are fantastic, but is trying to be a jack of all trades and master of none?
Nora is a superstar!

I have signed the petition. The only problem with the dinners is that the portions are tincy not enough for a main meal IMO because they have so little to spend on the actual food it doesn't go very far. I think the only solution is that the goverment need to subisdy the cost of the dinners.

Missed it

Somebody suggested that they picked that school to make the programme in because of Nora and she will probably get her own spin-off show!

I agree, the government should invest more money. All those initiatives they start because the kids are too fat and/or unhealthy when rather than putting on a sticky plaster they should go back to one of the roots and try a little preventative measure... money where it should be. In our schools!!

I really like Jamie Oliver, he seems to be really genuine and wanting to give something back.

The state of meals in schools is shocking, it should not be allowed - what they eat now, is probably what they will be eating as adults - and the govt wonder why we have problems with heart disease and obesity. They should be spending a little more and using fresh, healthy and ingredients, but also EDUCATING the kids into how and why and how to cook healthy food for themselves.

How about this idea???? As part of their technology curriculum in schools, which includes food tech, get the kids in their - desiging, planning and preparing meals. And not just as a one off - make it a regular occurence.

And simply ban the junk. If it isn't there - they can't have it.

The meat and ingredients they use in regular school dinners (not JO) is the cheapest you can buy I think that they have 37p to spend per child.

BUT

  • is cheap pasta and cheap rice any more expensive than cheap frozen chips????

  • is frozen chicken or minced meat dearer than cheap fishfingers and burgers?
Report
SenoraPostrophe · 23/02/2005 22:21

hulababy - decent frozen mince is more expensive than cheap fish fingers/burgers because it only contains meat. I bet those burgers are 50% filler.

Report
Twiglett · 23/02/2005 22:22

they weren't technically fishfingers and burgers though

they were all reconstituted .. hence why the burgers were grey

so I bet the actual protein content was masked by the filler content
