What is 'wrong' with max from corrie [SPOILER ALERT added by MNHQ]

I've seen his behaviour go from lovely to constantly on the go and being very hyper and naughty.

I've just read an interview with 'David' that says that when max gets seen to and medication things will get easier.

I hope they aren't going to suggest that ADHD comes on like this and add fuel to the fire that ADHD is just a label they give to kids to appease poor parenting, because it isn't.

Hopefully my fears will be unfounded. But I can just see it coming and it's going to really annoy me if they do that.

Just read something else. They bloody well are and all. His 'ADHD' suddenly coming on, after loads of family grief. So people will now have more fuel to say 'oh yeah ADHD, that's just crap parents syndrome isn't it?'

Bloody stupid soap.

My DS doesn't have ADHD but I know plenty of children that do and it's not fair to portray it as a sudden change in behaviour at... 8 years old FFS

Yes they are going to be doing an adhd storyline read it on digital spy other week. Bit random and guessing he will get back to "normal" once story has run its course.

Dont think Corrie has researched very well

Oh ffs I had a feeling this was where they were going with it. Is there anyway we can get a bit of protest in advance going? I mean they really are sending out the message ADHD is just down to crappy home life.

I dont know what they are trying to get from it. The article I read also said Kylie was going to get hooked on his medication which would lead upto her leaving story when the actress goes on maternity leave.

My younger brother suffers and it took years to diagnose and even then tablets wernt offered unless really bad, hes 17 now and still suffers with it

If they wanted to do an ADHD storyline then they could have used Joseph who must be getting to toddler age now or given dull little Liam the storyline (seriously what is the point of Maria and Liam these days?)

I was thinking we could do a mass email or something we could send. It's really annoyed me. I know ADHD presents differently in different children but the children are always with it. He was a calm little boy and now he's being really naughty. That's not what happens randomly.

As a teacher I'd definitely say his behaviour is a reaction to all the drama is his home, his mum feeding him shit and shouting at the headteacher for it, living on a street where people are murdered every few months, his house being robbed, his uncle getting brain damage.

Agree totally, it's surprising there isn't a mass outbreak of children going off the rails in that street when they all have such erratic home lives.

Craig is supposed to have SNs, but they never make much of his character, no idea how old he 's supposed to be.

If they're going to do such a big story line then they need to start from toddlers and use a child that hasn't been in and out of care most of his life. Because that's what they would investigate first. It would take years of battling too. You'd not just be able to walk into a doctors and say "my child is hyperactive" and they'll give you a diagnosis of ADHD without looking to see if there's any other reason for the massive change in behaviour

Corrie is appalling on medical matters.

Tracy's transplant: barely mentioned now.
Gary's PTSD: vanished after its storyline ran its course
Tracy's "miscarriage": date of conception ONS was known, she was at least 26 weeks, so it was a stillbirth.

Back a bit: Alison's baby stillborn, and helpline at end of show was for GD (which she also had), not SANDS.

I expect there will be other examples.

Corrie is so stupid at the moment. Another murder, somebody falsely accused. Again. It's so lazy. And then this story coming up. And Faye's pregnancy.
I can't be bothered watching.

And whenever anyone has a baby it comes really quick and they can't get to the hospital in time. Have the writers never experienced childbirth?!
The thing that annoys me is that real life is quite interesting so they could do some good stories that are realistic but it's like they're stuck in a rut of cliched sensational soap stories.

I know. It's just annoying that it's going to be fuelling the 'ADHD is just poor parenting' fire. Which is bollocks.

It will be another Corrie story line when I have to use the forward button. Sad

I thought Max was badly behaved because he lives in a chaotic household with idiots for parents doing things on a whim all of the time. ADHD didn't cross my mind.

Hurr1cane · 23/07/2014 13:39

No it didn't cross my mind either. But that's what they're going to do. And then he's going to be on medication.

I know parents who have fought for a diagnosis for years and they always have to have their parenting and house hold life assessed first. It took years. But this can't take years because it's to be done in time for the actress who plays kylie to go on maternity leave.

How long is the wait for a paediatricians assessment? 3-6 months at least? After a GP refers them of course, and getting a GP appointment can take a week. And then they'd have to go for a CAHMS assessment, another good few months waiting, and then back to the paediatrician. Another few months wait at least. That's if there were no home issues.

They'd probably have to do a triple P training course or something similar as well first, because, well, they're really shit.

And even then, if other parents experiences are anything to go by, they'd blame it on the arrival of his half sister and wait to see if he settled down for a good 6-12 months before seeing him again.

Did you see it last night?

Max has a diagnosis, took medication for the first time, and went sweetly to bed.

As a parent of a child that actually HAS ADHD (among other things), I was appalled at this storyline. Yes, of course, let's ramp up the idea with the public that it's just "naughty child syndrome" due to bad parenting (of course they had to pick the child with questionable parents didn't they?). And there is no way they get the diagnosis like that and meds right away.

First it's a referral to the paed (if they can get one - took us fighting ages to even get that!), then months to get into paed, then they have to observe for quite some time, then do assessments, then behavioural management... so a good year or two.... LONG before you're given an actual diagnosis or prescribed any medication.

Now people think "okay, child is naughty, parents think it can't possibly be their rubbish parenting, so take child into GP who diagnoses ADHD on the spot and hands out meds like candy.. next they'll get DLA and a free car...." Hmm

So incredibly irresponsible of Corrie writers.

Oh the magic of TV Ritalin. One dose and the "ADHD" is gone. Like chuffing cillit bang.
