Really interesting programme about the demise of honey bees (and a bit scary).

Should have added it is on now with Bill Turnbull from breakfast tv. He's kept bees for 12 years so is a very knowledgable and interesting presenter for this sort of programme.

Bugger, missed it. Will have to try & get it on iplayer when I'm back in the uk (am abroad, can watch uk tv but can't record & I was watching Sherlock)

Was it good? I teach beekeeping so might get it to show my students on the next course, if BBC will give me a copy

It was fascinating and, I agree, a bit scary. The little radar antennae that they put on the bees was amazing.

Oh, and it was also good to know that the huge varieties of flowers grown in urban gardens are actually helping to keep the bee population going.

Yes, gardens are hugely important. Bees can barely survive in some arable farm areas now, as it's all fields and no hedges and wild areas.

I think the point they were also making about urban gardens is that people these days have a far larger variety of different flowers, some of which are quite exotic, which is probably a fairly recent development (say within the last 10 or 20 years). So the bees are getting an extremely varied diet, so to speak!

It was Horizon at its best. Interesting and informative and helped by having a presenter that had a real interest in his subject matter. I think it would be lovely if farmers were encouraged to plant wildflower borders to their arable crops as shown in the Reading University experiment. As well as looking lovely and not affecting the crop it also meant a 500% increase in bees in that area
