coronation street Tina/Gary storyline

I understand that Tina has the mother half of parental responsibility with Joe/Jake, but surely Gary has normal fathers parental responsibility/rights to contact and so could just apply for shared residency and have the baby living with him and Izzie half the time anyway? Or am I missing something?

Funnily enough dh and I discussed that tonight - also why should mum have majority custody ?

i know while in hospital mums have the say - presumably incase a dad is abusive as it is such a vulnerable time for lots of women emotionally. The nurses checked with me if DDs dad was allowed to go to the room without me there when DD was in, as if its a routine question.

But once the court case is through I wouldn't have thought it would take longer than a year or 2 to get 'half and half' so to speak, but the characters are talking like they have no chance of ever bringing him up without Tina changing her mind. As is Tina!

(in NICU that was, not sure on the rules for dads on ward.)

As I understand it, if the mother and father aren't married, the father has no parental rights until he is named on the birth certificate. That was Tyrone's problem - Kirsty didn't put him on the birth cert, hence Tyrone tricking Kirsty into getting married.

But if the dad gets a DNA test done through court they put him on the birth certificate and they'll then have equal 'rights'.

I think Tyrone went the marriage way to avoid Kristy kidnapping her while the court process was done.

(I need to stop taking this so seriously haha Wink)

I don't watch Corrie but have seen some of this. Is the baby going to turn out to be Tina and Chris Fountain's?

They've said that Gary/Izzy are taking legal advice, so perhaps that will include seeking PR for him (we'll have to wait and see), but amount of contact isn't a given, and there's very little RL precedent for such cases (Surrogacy UK website says there have been about 900 babies born via surrogates in UK, and in only 2 cases has the baby not been handed over as intended).

We haven't seen baby Ruby for ages, who watches her and Hope while Tyrone's fixing cars and Fiz's stitching knickers? See also Amy McDonald and Simon Barlow, I'm setting up as a childminder and moving to Weatherfield, I'll be quids in.

Unconnected but having watched a bit of the Omnibus this morning-

Dev is still the worst actor ever.
Tracey luv needs to be written out pronto. Just dreadful.

Does Cindy Beale know that him off Taggart killed Dev's 'lovely Sooooonneeeeeta'?

This story line is giving me The Rage. I have been avoiding corrie because of it. Yes tina carried the baby but it is gary and izzys baby. How on earth would she explain to baby jake about his real parents when he grows up.

I did catch a bit last night and got my hopes uphen I saw carl with that trophy in his hand.

Dev is a terrible actor.

It was Izzy's egg. I like Tina and Tommy but I think this is a terrible, terrible thing to do to Gary and Izzy (who I can't stand).

As for Dev, he is terrible, but Karl deserves to get his come-uppance. Stella has no idea it was him.

Oh right Who, I guess he will be found out.

The Gary/Izzy family aren't very likeable are they?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/06/2013 23:28

They are awful, especially Owen. I'm just watching last night's episodes now, Karl is stalking Dev.

Every time I hear Baby Jake, something in my mind goes 'Gogee Gee Aaah'

Magic Fun and all that!

Terrible situation with Tina keeping the baby, I don't know enough about the rules and regs of surrogacy to comment on legalities.

Dev and his columbo jacket does my head in. But his kids are awful (sorry but its true)

My two favourite characters are Mary and Roy - but where's Norris these day?

I was wondering about this, was it Tina's egg and Gary's sperm? If it's Izzy's egg and Gary's sperm surely they are the legitimate parents? What biological claim does Tina have?

PS. I like Dev and his acting style Blush

No it wasn't turkey baster method. She went to hospital. It's Izzy's egg and Gary's sperm. Until we find out it isn't and it's actually Tommy's and Tina's Wink

The turkey baster method.was used by Sean and Violet years ago to make Dylan. Tina et al went through a proper surrogacy and I remember it being mentioned at the time in the counselling that the person who gives birth is legally the mother. Remember Tina saying there was no need to worry about her not handing it over!

I think the legal process will deem the need for a DNA test & that's when Jake/Joe is found to be T&T's biologically too.

That saidhasn't someone seen some spoilers of Izzy holding t'baby & taking him home?

They might not need a DNA test as no-one is disputing the origin of the gametes.

But this being a soap, perhaps there'll be one anyhow and they'll discover a mix up at the clinic and that the baby is genetically unrelated to any of them!

I just wonder if it goes to court wether they'll ask for the DNA test just to strengthen the case but (it being soapland as you say) it goes against them as Joey-Jake is T&T's?

Report
LalyRawr · 20/06/2013 10:09

Because its a surrogacy it's legally slightly different.

Gary COULD go on the birth certificate. But only if he is present at the registry office and ONLY if he has Tina's permission.

9 times out of ten when this has happened in real life, the 'genetic' parents basically find it too hard to only have the child on the weekends, especially the mother as she will not be the mum.

But Tina could go through the CSA for maintenance payments.

Report
braveandcrazy · 23/06/2013 15:28

So, who registers the birth and which mum is on the birth certificate? Does The 'birth' mum (Tina) do it before handing the baby over, or would the surrogate parents usually wait and do it themselves? And has Tina already registered the birth in Corrie? I don't recall it being mentioned, although with the baby being prem, maybe it hasn't happened yet. In fact, - another question! Can prem or ill babies in hospital be registered there, rather than go to the register office?
