1/23 - Man of Science, Man of Faith

Series two begins and the castaways are suffering. The men all have shaggy beards, the women's roots are showing and Hurley is skinny as a rake. No, don't be daft - they all look the same as ever and it's great to have them back on our screens. If you remember, when we last visited the island, Locke had blown off the door of that hatch in the jungle and "the Others" (whoever they are) were closing in on the survivors' camp.

Tonight we get two episodes that slightly overlap in time. The second concentrates on the fate of the rafters, but the first opens with an extraordinary scene of a mystery man's morning routine. It's a sequence that sends our heads spinning and may ruin a certain Mamas and the Papas song for ever. Lost does love springing surprises and there are more to come, including an eerie appearance by young Walt that feels straight out of a David Lynch film (and makes about as much sense). Meanwhile, in the flashbacks we see a young Jack wearing a laughable wig while treating the woman who will become his fiancée. "I'm intense," he tells her. And so is this whole show.
