Should we look to remove all genetic diseases from the population? Do parents have a duty not to pursue pregnancies that may result in a genetic condition being passed on to another generation? These aren't easy questions to answer, but here, genetics experts and parents explain their views. The mothers and fathers talk honestly about the illnesses that have afflicted their babies, in a programme that will push all your sympathy buttons. But paranoid soon-to-be parents might want to opt for something less doom-filled.

I was actually going to ask if anybody would be able to record this for me.
It sort of hits a nerve as by the looks of it my baby has a genetic condition.
I can't record BBC 4 though, and I'm going out so can't watch it.

Anybody?

I can't record BBC4 either, sorry, or I would.

I'm going out in a minute, but maybe some of you could bump this for me in case somebody turns up who could record it!

PARP! What a ridiculous notion, for anyone to assume a person's life isn't worth living b/c of the abilities they're born with. Everyone gets a different hand in life.

Candida Harris explores the emotional and practical dilemmas faced by prospective parents who suffer from a serious inheritable condition, desperate for a family yet all too aware of the implications of passing on their disability to their children. Candida also investigates the brave new world of reproductive technology. But is the guarantee of a perfect baby always the perfect solution?

Way too late for me to watch!

Just as an aside, who on earth calls their baby Candida?

Isn't that the "scientific" name for thrush?

I managed to tape all but the first 15 minutes. I will CAT you emkana- there was a bit of ghastliness from a professor of law, but it was mostly families' stories. Tom Shakespeare was on it, and I think the ending part would help you.

Jimjams, it was nowhere near as bad as you imagined :)

Thanks very much tamum!
Do you have to pay to receive CATS?
Because I haven't.

My e mail would be emkana (at) gmx dot net

thought most of it was fairly alright but tbh for me it was the first 15 minutes that were the most horrifying. I missed the first 5 minutes, but basically the first family had a child with something called "invisible x"? (apologies if I got it wrong). They were told that there was a 50% chance of subsequent children having the condition, but there was a prenatal test available for the condition. So they continued to get pregnant and have the babies tested at 13 weeks, and if the condition was present they terminated the pregnancies. She had two terminations during the course of the programme, and although she said it was very painful, she indicated that she basically would want to keep getting pregnant and terminating until she had a healthy baby. They did name and have funerals for the terminated fetuses. Now I can totally understand and sympathise with someone who finds out their baby has a genetic condition and decides to terminate a pregnancy on that basis, I imagine that must be the most painful thing in the world, but to terminate pregnancy after pregnancy? I could understand her terminating one pregnancy, but tbh I got the impression she would terminate 10 pregnancies if it came to that.
