He was in Puglia this week, visiting a local school - the horror on the school cooks' faces when he showed them a turkey twizzler was a sight to behold! Brilliant television

Did they show what the children eat. I heard he said something about a McD shutting down from lack of interest......

Yes! The McDs only stayed open for 3 months. There is a 3-course set menu in schools there. Nothing is allowed to be fried. Fresh fruit is provided every day. The budget per child per day is (iirc) 91p. Compared to 38p here.

I pay E4.50 per day for lunch for my daughter, Her last meal was, Tuna steak and vegtables, then pasta followed by fruit. She didn't eat the fruit because she had eaten too much. They are allowed to eat as much as they like, 2nd 3rd helpings.

Puglia is in the spur of Italy. Very pretty. Have you seen on the Tv the Trulli's. They are built in that area.

Puglia's the region in the heel of Italy's boot. Very poor.

The other thing he did was to repeat his School Dinners experiment of holding up different fruit and veg and asking the children to identify them. The class of 4 year olds knew everything - artichokes, the lot. When British 15 year olds had trouble identifying a leek!

That 91p would get you a lot more food as well. The Italians don't like to spray their food and from what I've seen they buy it locally from local producers. Pasta is about a 1/3 of the price. Fruit and veg again about 1/3 to half the price depending where you buy in the UK and in Italy. Fish is also much cheaper because its eaten more here. The only thing that is more expensive is meat but the Italian diet tends to have less meat in it, not a bad thing.
