It's impossible not to be moved by this two-part film, which tells the stories of Britain's last surviving First World War veterans, or "tommies". When filming on the project began three years ago, just 27 of the millions who fought during the war were still alive. Today, only four of these remarkable men survive. Their stories are poignant, and sometimes heartbreaking, and bring home more vividly than any dramatised documentary ever could, the horrors of the so-called "war to end all wars". Alfred Anderson, who's 109, is the last tommy alive to have witnessed the Christmas truce of 1914, when the soldiers on both sides stopped fighting. His testimony, and that of his fellows, is remarkable.
