Midsomer Rhapsody

Three cheers for DCI Barnaby. If it wasn't for him the Midsomer villages would be awash with unsolved murders and we'd be baffled by what we'd been watching. This episode is a convoluted story about a famous long-dead local composer, Joan Alder. First her music teacher is inexplicably bashed over the head, then a priceless manuscript of Joan's is unearthed, leading to blackmail and claims about her life and death. Long-lost daughters, husbands and documents emerge, while there are almost as many revelations about her love life as there are dead bodies and familiar faces among the cast (June Whitfield, Frank Middlemass and Trevor Peacock among them). Weddings can also be murder, as the Barnaby family discovers.

The House in the Woods

Despite the high crime rate locally and its reputation for being haunted, a derelict house in Midsomer Newton is attracting interest from villagers, developers, conservationists and a pair of nutty historical buffs. Unfortunately, it takes no time at all before two potential purchasers are found garrotted outside the house. DI Barnaby (John Nettles) plods his way round the clues in his usual, well-mannered way, with the aid this time of acting DC Ben Jones (Barnaby's usual sidekick Scott has phoned in sick), an enthusiastic PC he's temporarily promoted. But what's really confusing is that the owner of the old house is played by George Baker, star of another famous detective series as Inspector Wexford. It makes it difficult in some scenes to remember who's the cop and who's not.
