Pre teen hair loss

in DS - twelve years-I noticed recently his previously thick healthy hair falling out in one patch-no family history of this-the GP thought it could be alopecia and also gave him some anti fungal shampoo and tablets. The bald patch is much improved but his hair still doesn't seem in very good condition generally. He is growing rapidly at the moment. Has anyone else experienced similar?

I have experience with alopecia, so could answer questions about that. But of course it could be something else.

The general poor hair condition could be associated with rapid growth I suppose. He might need a nutrient boost. But an actual bald patch would not be caused in the same way and would be a separate matter I should think.

He was also blood tested and had slight anaemia and higher than normal white blood cell count from a glandular infection which all seems to be levelled out now. Does alopecia have any other symptoms such as these do you know? Thanks

I don't think alopecia is associated with those symptoms, no. It is an auto-immune disorder (the immune system attacks the hair follicles). About a third of patents just suffer one outbreak and never get it again. Another third have recurring outbreaks.

The most effective treatment is a course of steriods, but these work better for some people than others.

Oh, an infection with fever is thought by some people to be a trigger for an outbreak, though not the underlying cause, so the glandular infection might be relevant inthat sense.

Cheers for that-he's booked in for another check up soon so hopefully will resolve soon-I'm being anxious mum, though, of course. Was concerned about bullying over the bald patch but thankfully cold weather has meant the wearing of woolly hats...so no problems there.
