For those with a DC who has a moped..

So after telling DD she wasn't getting a moped for her 16th birthday last november because it's waaaay too dangerous we are considering changing our minds. She has just got a weekend/summer job which is a zero hours contract but means she can be starting as early 7.15am. Now this is fine on weekdays and saturdays as she can catch the first bus from the bottom of the road and just about make it in on time assuming it shows up , but on a sunday/bank holiday it means I have to give her a lift . Now today she has asked for one again and it does appear to be a possible solution as I will no longer to give her a lift and as it is so early in the morning the roads will be quiet and so hopefully not as dangerous. She will pay for the bike, licence, insurance, tax and fuel but I was just wondering for those of you with a DC with a moped how much would you say you/they paid for the initial bike, insurance and tax? My brother is a mechanic so will be able to check over all that sort of stuff and hopefully find us a deal but just wondering how much we should be expecting to pay for a low powered piece of crap . P.S please keep your horror stories away from this thread!!

How often will she work Sundays and how often will those Sundays be 7.15 starts?

If it isn't going to be every week then personally I would continue driving her.

Pretty much every weekend through the summer her boss reckons as it's a hotel in a seaside resort so not likely to quieten down!

Tax is £7 for the year
Insurance with breakdown cover is £33 per month for us

The bike was £500 but with hindsight we should have bought a brand new one for £700.

But there is also an initial cost of £120 to be factored in for the CBT training course. They cannot ride until they have completed this. And there's also £50 for the provisional licence too.

No horror stories here and has defiantly promoted additional responsibility being shown from my ds.

Thanks maccie and thinking about it, it would probably be more dangerous for me to drive her every week as if I have been out the night before and only got in at say 1am i wouldn't even have had 6 hours sleep, on top of the fact I would have been working the past 8 days straight every other week.

CBT around £100, plus provisional license £50. We paid £350 for a second hand moped which saw DS1 through til he was 18.. and allowed him to get to his rural p/t job and save for his own driving lessons.

Of course there is a risk.. but I have to say DS1 is 21 now, and a much better car driver for having ridden a moped..he is much more aware of road users, and weather conditions. I rode small motorbikes on and off over the years and while I worried about him, it gave him independence and a desire to earn money for his own car!

My dear son and my dear daughter and my dearest father and my dear uncle and my dear mother dearest and my dear dear dear grandmother all rode mopeds, they're safer than motorbikes and make a decent starting vehicle for dear sons like your dearest son. It also makes financial sense, your dear son would find it much harder to finance the running of a dear car.
