Belly Button piercing

What age do people consider ok to get a belly button piercing? My lovely niece (15 and a half) wants hers done and my sister said fine, she can get it done in the summer before they go on holiday. I agree this is perfectly ok at 15 but some of her friends are outraged and are making my sister feel like a terrible parent. Opinions please

My dd had her navel pierced last summer when she was 15. I think its perfectly ok as long as the child is responsible enough to look after it properly. I would question having it done before going on holiday though - it's best to keep the new piercing dry and clean, so I would avoid swimming pools for a couple of months if possible.

Don't take any notice of what other parents think - they only have the right to judge for their own children, not anyone else's, so just ignore them. There are far worse things your niece could be doing than getting a discreet piercing! I think it's really attractive on a young, slim woman.

If she wants it because she'll look good with it then why not? If she wants it cos all her friends have got one, or she knows you've always said you hate them that's a different thing.

My DSD had been asking since she went to high school, quoting various friends, asking for it for her birthday/Xmas etc, threatening to go do it herself.

After a while we just said fine, if you really want one go get one. She's nearly 16 now, doesn't have one and never mentions it any more.

Now it's a nose piercing!!! ;-)

My DD was 15. She kept pestering so DH took her. She passed out and had to lie down in the shop for half an hour!

My dd was 15. She was very responsible in looking after it.

My DD was 15 too. She'd been wanting it done for years, we said she could have it done in time for the summer holiday before she was16. Very envious that they didn't do belly button piercing when my stomach was flat enough:-(

DD has friends who had theirs done at 11.
She wanted hers done for christmas.
We settled on top of her ear.

I had mine done at 15 Smile

My mum came with me and ensured we had it done at a reputable place.

I never had any problems with it and still don't 12 years on Smile

I always liked choosing different bars to go in it.

Tell your sister to ignore other people - it's her daughter and she can decide whether to allow piercings or not.
Far better she allows it and makes sure it's done properly and looked after than her dd having it done secretly and getting an infection.

I was going to say the same as fluffybunnies, get her to wait until after the holiday. You have to keep a new piercing really clean to avoid infections and that includes no swimming. My piercer has known people to get nasty infections and bits cut off due the effects of sun and chemical in pools on holiday with new piercings. Not worth it if you can wait an extra two weeks.

In all honestly - what the difference between getting your ears pierced and your navel? Neither are for sexual titillation/anything dubious.

If school don't ban it, then let her. It can always heal up again if she has a change of heart later in life - its not like a tatoo.

It depends on how responsible the child is. I had mine done donkeys years ago and it hurt like crazy and I found it really hard to look after so removed it after a couple of weeks. My daughter had hers done at 16. I'd be more concerned if my daughter wanted to get a facial piercing, which thankfully they don't!

My dds had them at 15 and 17

I forget they have them, they're mostly covered up anyway
My only concern was that they looked after them and kept the area clean

TBH a belly button piercing is gonna stretch while preggers.. However they do look totes cute Smile 15 is old enough to choose though. As one wise woman said - "Ignore the haters cos somebody loves ya" - Miley Cyrus

I agree with moonshinestar2, did Miley Cyrus give up on her career when she was slated after her VMA performance? No, she persevered!

'Nobody's Perfect.Ya live and ya learn it!' Hannah Montana's wise words ok

I took my DD when she was 15 and if I were younger I would have had mine done too. I think they are the nicest of all the disfigurings piercings etc Grin

But surprised at someones DD being 11....didn't know it was allowed that young?

My piercing actually seemed to benefit from the lots of swimming I did on holiday after having it done. Open air pools and seawater. Meant to clean it with saltwater so not so different?!

I was also 15.

Everyone said to me 'it'll go septic'. It didn't, was absolutely fine!
