summer/ part time job for teen son?

My 16 year old son ids desperate for a summer job but is really struggling to find anything. We've tried all the businesses on the local industrial estate and local supermarkets and big DIY stores that are on a bus route. Any other ideas for teen work? He's up for anything. Another summer of overdosing on XBox will not be good :-(

Washing up in a pub? Big businesses, supermarkets etc usually have quite formal recruitment processes, even for teenagers. Try small local businesses instead. Does he have a CV?

Does he know someone who knows him enough to give him a try?
What is his cv like?
is he in a tourist area?
is he willing to live away from home for a few weeks?
has he tried the job centre or whatever is it now called

Try local gardeners/landscapers - they are often busy in the summer and could use some extra hands. Or builders etc. Could he mow lawns, trim hedges for neighbours?

best bet is someone you know willing to give him a part time job. Around where i live part time/summer jobs for school kids have practically all but disappeared due to people hanging onto them (think 20+ year old paperboys!), farmers more inclined to hire foreign students (we are rural and when i was a teen most days in the summer were spent at the berries) and in general actual adults needing jobs. I also worked in a supermarket after school and saturdays but when you have 100 people applying for 1 job in tesco/asdas what chance does a schoolkid have?

I have helped him put together a basic CV for the more formal applications that he has made e.g. Homebase. Without any previous job his CV is VERY basic though.

Is it about the money for him or does he want the experience? He could volunteer somewhere or see about unpaid work in an area he is interested in pursuing

Just had another thought - old peoples home. Several of dd's friends work in them.

Donnt worry about a cv being basic in the beginning.
Just about everyone's is at 16.
But remember to put in hobbies,[not x box or tv watching!], and anything else at all relevant to the particular job that he is aplying for, even if it is only 1 line.

I think the main problem is that it is rather late in the day to apply for formal jobs over the summer.
With ecperience, I learnt with mine that it is best to hit it at around the right time, perhaps just before Easter.
Companies have certain checks to do, and like to have their potential workforce in place well before the summer start.

Is hope now would be that
1.someone drops out somewhere, which often happens, and he can and is prepared to jump in straight away

1. he asks friends and tells friends that he wants a job, and they tell him that they know someone who has dropped out
   
2. or as discussed before, a family friend or realtive is able to employ him, or give him voluntary work which is very useful for cvs.

What about catering businesses who may have weddings or other functions over the summer and need casual waiting staff they can call on at short notice?

Have you tried this? They update daily and our area has had several temporary jobs advertised in the last fortnight.

my friends son has just got in mcdonalds until he goes back to 6th form, he only had his work experience to put on his cv, but I think they are happy to take on anyone who is willing enough, good luck to him
