Belly piercing

My 15 yr old dd has a 'half-in-half-out' belly button, and has told me she's had snide 'sympathetic' comments from her 'friends', and that one boy told her it looks like a piece of popcorn. I have told her all bellies are different, and not to attatch any importance to it.. but she says it is taking away her confidence not being able to wear cropped-tops (yes in winter!) like her friends and that she feels like a freak and can't bear to look at it. She says a piercing will cover it but... No!!! I can't bear the thought of it. Any opinions?

Let her. Choose a reputable place and go with her...but she pays. I had mine done as an adult (19). It is not painful, easy to keep clean and heals up very quickly after you take it out. I have been able to take part in sport with it in (if you are concerned about PE). It's not permanent like a tattoo. If it makes her feel better, why not?

I have a half in half out belly button and when i was 15 i was desperate to get it done as i thought it would make it look much nicer.
I begged my older sister to take me so i could get it done (I lived with her) she said no, every day i would ask and she would tell me the reasons why i shouldnt get it done.
few months went by i turnt 16 and took myself to a reputable piercing shop and got my piercing done

like PP said it didnt hurt, was very easy to clean and healed very very quickly.
im now 21 and still have it in, even whilst pregnant with DD and its still fine.

I had mine done at 18, took it out last year as a bit too fat. I loved how it looked, it didn't hurt to get done, its easily looked after and covered for sport. I would let her - but try to talk about self esteem and how real friends are actually nice to each other as well.

Agree with other posters. It's not a very big deal IMO but do discuss the bigger issues around it. 15 is a tricky age, it's good to have your mum on your wavelength.

Stress that if she has it done she needs to keep it scrupulously clean. I had mine done at 18 (still in at 32!)
For a few months after the piercing, every morning I'd twist the ring round and a little blob of pus would come out!

Thanks so much for your wise comments. She does have a close, loyal bunch of friends who are just sometimes a bit too 'honest'! I suppose i'm just frustrated that to her, looking 'perfect' is everything. Will definately make sure she keeps it clean though.

I loved mine. It made me feel better about my belly button. Unfortunately I left it in too long during pregnancy and now it looks like my belly button has bunny ears :( aww well
