Teenagers

mobile phones - lots of call minutes.

Was just reading the other thread posted today about unlimited texts. I have a ds who uses up loads of call time (and quite a few texts!). He pays for his mobile phone bill himself out of his Saturday job wages but it's often over £50 (which I think is way too much!).

His contract with Virgin is about to end. He could get just a SIM deal (as his phone is OK). Anyone know of a really good deal with lots of unlimited call time.

I did a good deal for DD with mobiles.co.uk. It cost £25 a month, but has unlimited texts, about 500 mins of calls and unlimited date. The really good thing about it is, I got 14 months of line rental FREE! You have to claim it back every 6 months/3 months etc, so you need to make a note of it on your calendar so you don't forget. It's worked out at just over £10 per month. I haven't checked the deals lately, but it certainly works well for her.

If you are responsible for the contract be VERY wary of continuing a contract for a teen, especially one who'd capable of overspending easily.

It is YOU who will have the bill at the end of the day and YOU with the busted credit record for years to come.

Best deals to go for are SIM only and keep/buy a phone (which you then insure as a piece of hardware but need no insurance for excess use if stolen etc)

Gifgaff SIM only
giffgaff.com/index/offer

£25/month gets you 1500 minutes unlimited txt and web , but the lesser "bags" might be fine

For more minutes with 3 (2000_ BUT txts are capped at 5000

If you think I'm being a scaremongering old bag who doesn't trust their kids, just hand about on the money saving expert mobile phone forums to spot the people who have come to grief either with their own contracts or the kids contracts - and if an adult who is PAYING for their own contract starts bleating "it's the networks fault I've gone over my minutes..... used accidental data when abroad etc etc " you can be sure that the kids who aren't actually paying the contract (and anyway, are kids, they make mistakes - it's in the job discription) will do to.

Another technique- if it's the girlfiend he's always talking to is to get them both on the same network- if they were both on giffgaff these calls would be free (I think you have to hang up and re dial after 60 mins) and his bill could plummet right down- even if he paid for her to have a basic gifffgaff £5 or £10 bag!
