"I'm so ugly"

This was accompanied by wailing by DD aged 13 today. The main problem was that her hair wasn't right, but then she went on to sob about her forehead, mouth, sticking out ribs etc. She was getting ready to go out with friends.

I know teens have crises like this, but I could say nothing right. Any advice?

Stupid thing is she is gorgeous, tall and stunning. But then I am her mother!

hey, i have crises like these depending on where i am in my cycle, and they get set off my getting ready to go somewhere. and i am embarassingly old.
how about some random quick compliments? not making a big deal out of it, gushing over her, or she'll think you're just doing it for the sake of her feelings. just maybe glance at her before she goes out the door and go 'oh! you look really nice in that top darling...when will you be back?'
lame suggestion, but it worked for one of my twins [although i got her twin to do it too]

I have had this from my 12 yr old for a couple of years, at least, except it is more about "I'm so fat". And I tried the random compliment as she had got back from 2 wks hols with her Dad, and told her she was looking slim: was accused of lying. It's so upsetting!
