Guinea-Pigs and Allergies

Is there any relation that guinea-slaves have noticed between guinea-pig coat type and allergies to the owner?

Back in my day guinea-pigs were available in 3 flavours breeds : smooth, abby, peruvian

Now ,there are millions - ok quite a few.

DD is fine with smooth or abby but our little Rex boy brings her skin up in a red rash (and of course she cuddles him at her neck Hmm )

Is it just a particular oddity of GP3 (he has many oddities Grin ) He stores hay seeds in his coat ,possibly for later if he's hungry.

So anyone who has a variety of pig types (or has had) have you noticed any reactions.

We have Abby and smooth and no allergies so can't help. Just googled Rex to remind me and they do look woollier so I'm guessing their hair is a different consistency which might make a difference allergy wise.

Tell GP3 to wear a mac when snuggling your DD.

Also can you try and get smooth or Abby girls so your DD can have easier cuddles? Have you already picked them? Did you go for pink claws? (Sorry have slightly hijacked your thread but got curiousGrin).

Grin we're going on Wednesday to get the girls . I've already said to DD "no Rex" because I think if she was mobhanded with Rex fur she might combust or something .(She still insists on cuddling GP3 despite the rash. Luckily it's not a respiratory reaction)

We need to do a very skillful meet-up, (Dill is being neutered next week) so he can say "Hi" but no funny business until he's safe.

Colourwise and claw-wise we don't mind (I can cope with another set or two of black claws) , the names list is growing Wink

(Just realised I'll need another outdoor run for GP3 when he needs to be apart from his harem, but I've convinced DH that he can attach it to the Pighouse to give them an outdoor space, once they can all share the big run )

I am allergic to adult guinea pigs - of any type. If I touch one and then touch my face, my eyes swell up to the point where I can hardly see. Even being in the room with them makes my eyes itch.

Oooh Sad that sounds like a severe allergy bronya .
Might be the hay as well as the fur that causes the allergy?

If DD had a severe allergy we'd be stuck, she's very hands on with the hogs. We had no trouble with GP1 or GP2 , just GP3 Rex fur.
I have no idea if long fur or a Texel or Swiss would cause problems either so we'll err on the side of caution.
Hay is fine with her (and she's been near cats/dogs without issue)
