We brought 2 girl piggies from a breeder just over 3 weeks ago for my sons birthday. We are all completely smitten and they are very pampered! Went to their hutch this morning to put them out into their large run on the grass. Picked up who I now think is mummy (she did seem to have grown very quickly especially around the tummy: I should have guessed!) gave her a cuddle, put her in the run. Went back to get 2nd piggie and found the baby all curled up in the corner Shock. Immediately went and put mum back with baby. Put plenty of food, water and hay in there. What else do I do?? Will she have more?? I was going to clean the hutch today obviously I will leave it a few days. My kids will be delighted, I'm in shock!

Awww Congratulations (I know it's out of the blue but Congrats are in order Grin )

Mum pig will get on with feeding her baby, they are very ameanable mothers and I have never heard of female GPs eating their young like some other quadropeds yes rabbits I mean you can do.

Baby guineas are much fuller formed, teeth ,fur, open eyes and able to waddle.

They are usually born fairly quickly (ours had three piglets within 40 minutes) so chances are there's just one, BUT keep a check on her- any straining, high temperature (feel her ears and paws) dull eyes, lethargy, not eating/drinking and any bleeding from her genitals , contact your vet.
Female guineas have a waxy secretion in season and after mating and until she cleans up, there might be some of this round her rump.

She would've been half way through (its 63-70 days gestation) when you got her.
Double check your other pig is a sow (they will mate again straight after birthing tsk ) and hopefully she isn't upduffed as well.

Then you need to decide the fate of piglet- it would work out well if it's another female. If it's a boar, you'll need to seperate him from mum (and aunt) when he's about 3-4 weeks , or he'll start showing an unhealthy interest. The sows will usually wean the piglets themselves.

And - contact your breeder because there might be other people getting a surprise present and it's not the best practice to send your pigs out pregnant Wink

And you'll get lots of Envy squee and demands for pictures.

So

Thank you for the advice! I have transitioned from sheer panic to excited, baby is so cute Smile next time piglet ventures far enough out that I can take a picture I will. Will get them all sexed to checked they are girls... As lovely as this is I would rather not have any more surprises!

Don't be tempted to put the piglet out on the grass yet. And when you do, build up slowly (half an hour to begin with)
Make sure everything is escape proof too (my DH put mesh round our run when we got GP3 at 6 weeks. He wasn't at risk of escape and he wouldn't get his chubby little leg through the gap now Grin )

Is piglet a single one? If she is a young mum , chances are she'd have one piglet. Fingers crossed it's a sow.

Awww baby guinea pigs are the best! You can handle them from birth. We had one who had some surprise babies and they were so tame as we handled them so much. Enjoy!

Thank you so much! It seems very contented and piglet has ventured out of it's 'nest' for a nibble on food and has eaten hay too. Mum also seems fine so that's good (was worried as she's is young) hopefully a happy ending. It's a pure white piglet, cute and cuddly! Smile

They are just the cutest.
My sister had two boys and I had a girl. We were allowed to have one set of babies and when they were arriving we could tell as the dad was squeaking away.
Turns out there were three - one fell into my hands when I went to check them.
The best bit was their was a mini version of each of the adults. One brown, one black and one golden.
Love how they are perfect miniatures.
I have no idea why people is Peru and Bolivia would want to eat them.

Oh how exciting! You will have to let us know how many she has!

Our piggie baby is so cute, bigger then I thought it would be (poor mum!) but so far mum and baby doing well.

How long have you had your guinea pigs? How old are they?

The pregnant one we've only had 3 weeks, poor thing is only 11 weeks old.

Other one we'd had slightly longer, we got her mid may, she's about 15 weeks.

Pregnant one is in a box in her cage now which vet suggested we put in so she could nest. She's filled it full of hay and she's not showing any interest in her breakfast this morning. So I may come home to some little ones!!

Will keep you posted tho Grin

Will do, no little piggies yet. As she's only 11 weeks, if the pet shop gave us her age correctly, I think she may go another week before anything happens. Think I read somewhere that gestation is 9-10 weeks?

Been thinking today tho, we'd normally clean cage out at weekend but if she's nesting I don't want to disturb her really? Maybe just clear out the excess hay around the box?

63-72 days Milly but if she is just cooking one, she might be the shorter gestation. Females can get pg at 4 weeks and males can DTD at 4 weeks too.
So she might have been 4 weeks, you might have a couple of weeks to go yet? Or her age might be a bit skew-whiff in which case you might get an earlier surprise.

We always cuddled our sows (very carefully when picking up not to compress their bellies) they liked the attention.

If she comes out of her nest then maybe do a quick bedding change (if she's still porky Grin ) she will need to move herself to eat and drink, but that might be late evening.

Oohh fingers crossed.

Vet seemed to think there was at least two in there but we'll see. Her aged could be wrong, it really is wait and see but that's a good idea about the bedding change, thank you

Dd keeps watching with baited breath, have pointed out could be a few days yet!

honey how is your piglet ( I'm assuming it's just the one?)

They are gorgeous when they're piglets, their feet and ears seem huge for their little bodies.

When I was a child my mum shampooed the cream/beige carpet and Snowy (our sow) deposited 3 piglets on the floor. (We did know she was pg, didn't expect them that day though) Grin.

FernieB · 05/07/2014 21:51

Very sensible of Snowy to wait until everywhere was thoroughly clean before giving birth. Shows excellent maternal instincts and I'm sure that's exactly what your mum said Wink

Love the popcorning babies. Never did the baby pig thing - mine were big and bolshy when we got them.
