Start saving your newspapers (make sure you take any staples out) .
I use newspaper and hay for bedding (over cardboard and furry friendly cat letter)
The newspaper and hay gets rolled up and chucked out every 2 days (mine are messy little blighters)

Sawdust and shavings can irritate them (though you'll see loads of GPs bedded on them)

They are the loveliest little animals ever, it's impossible not to fall in love with them.

how often do you change the cat litter 70?

Hi Lack - it depends on which cage.
When my boys are inside on winter nights I take the hay+ newspaper out everyday. They like a fresh bed and DD and I love watching GP1 pop his bum onto the paper to 'mark' it with his pee Grin

The base has a big bag poured in (it makes it nice and spongey to walk on) and I put the paper on top. I take out any mucky patches but TBH the newspaper takes most.

Outdoors, I put rubber mats (honeycomb pattern , very thick) with the catlitter on top. Then a rubber carboot liner + cardboard+ newspaper+hay.
It lasts months because they're not in contact with that. It;s mainly to insulate outdoors.
Indoors to help absorb their 'odours'

The first winter I got them they were in the dining room. I used Catsan or the silcone based litter. (Had to make sure the pigs couldn't get their paws on it though)
The wooden catlitter (in a yellow bag) is like compressed wooden chips, it turns to an All Bran type texture.

I used to use the wooden stuff for my cats when I lived in a flat as it could be flushed. I used to use litter, then newspaper on their hay box when I was using fleece, but have switched from fleece as it was causing too much piggy hair to be floating around and aggravating mine and the DC's asthma.

I now use paper, then sawdust and hay, mainly because the sawdust is available and cheap. They seem fine with it though, no problems after about 9 months of use. I never considered using litter underneath the newspaper. I might give it a go, but with a 4x2 downstairs and 2x2 upstairs C&C cage, it could end up very expensive.

Sorry for hijacking your thread chillynose Blush

Where are you getting your piggies from? Are they litter-mates? My 3 are sisters. Black and ginger twins and a lilac with an odd stripe that changes from dark beige to ginger halfway round her back (mum was a himalayan and dad black/ginger abysinnian; breeder was hoping for a spiky haired himalayan but got our piggy of two halves instead).

love the names Smile

handle them loads. Our don't get handled enough and are all quite shy, though they are fine once they are picked up; it's the getting them picked up that is the issue.

This reminds me I need to clean them out today and I'm building them an upper storey so they have a wee bit more room. I love watching them scutter around in their new bedding
