Old Boy Passed Away 18.01.2013

As you all know it was only a matter of time. I was up with him into the very small hours and his bowels began to shut down and he was clearly in pain. This morning he was still alert and trying to eat but food gave him terrible cramps. I had to make the hardest decision to have him PTS. I wish he had slipped away but he just wasn't having it.

Luckily the vet on call I know personally, we have DC the same age. She was so kind and I know he fell asleep instantly. I held him until he passed. It was all very peaceful. My friend who drove me was in bits, I thought she would be too heartbroken to drive us home. Somehow I kept together until I got through the front door, then had a good sob Sad.

I've kept busy today. Odd things have made me cry. I hoovered his step upto his hutch then realised I don't need it anymore and that set me off Sad. His hutch is cleaned and disinfected. The bowls are washed. His blanket is washed and drying on the rad. I dug his grave while the DC were at school to beat any snowfall/ground freezing/getting too dark.

DH came home early dug hole even deeper. DD1 has gone to stay overnight with a friend as her way of coping. DD2 has cried loads, we all have.

Please look at my profile page. I've uploaded the photos I took yesterday of all piggies together. They are the pictures I promised I would post on the other thread about OB's illness. The other piggies are Fatimus, she adored OB and is agoulti and white. Naughty Girl is black American crested.

RIP My Special Boy

Rip Old Boy. A fantastic piglet.

You did all you could for him - wasn't he just drinking tea from a saucer? then you did the only thing left, to give him a dignified, pain free end.

You're a marvellous piggie-mum. OB was loved to the end. What a great boy he was!

Oh RIP OB.

So sad, even though you know it's immenent, it doesn't make it easier.

The cleaning of his cage and the putting away of his things for the last time -heartbreaking.
When you find one of his little beetroot coloured turds down the sofa, you'll be all Sad

Think about his life now. He's had a long eventful one.
And as you said previously, he even managed to get his boary end away with Fatimus. Which his brother wouldn't have managed (They would have lead Jonas Brother style lives)

To the Bridge now OB.

Yes RIP dear Old Boy, very much loved and cared for, leaving an irreplaceable guinea shaped hole. I like to think of all these little furries in a lovely meadow full of endless sweet grass, and in OB s case, cups of tea.....you will be sad, but you gave him a wonderful life. Lots of kind thoughts and hugs :) to you and your family x

PS Just looked again - OB and Fatimus 'kissing' - what a lovely photo! our Black and White girl, Eliza had a behind just like Fatimus, like an old lady wearing a bustle, used to waddle when she ran, which she did occasionally! ( very occasionally! )

Today's been easier but very Sad. The house feels empty, he had such a big presence. Went out this morning and normally the first thing I would do coming home would have been to let him out his hutch. I had to stop myself and that felt weird.

Tomorrow we'll clear space in the garage for his hutch. More closure. I'm keeping it in case I need a spare should either of the girls need to be quarantined.

Oh, must say, had a sympathy card from the vets today, which I thought was really kind of them Smile.

I'm glad you're enjoying the photos. To me it was important he had the comfort of other piggie company on his last full day. Seeing them did encourage him to eat more Smile.

fortified your first few days without him will seem so very sad - he sounds like he was a real character - special boy in your life - sounds like the girls are missing him too from what you wrote on the other thread about them looking in his hutch, it probably still has his scent despite all the cleaning - maybe if you keep his hutch you might be tempted to visit the local guinea rescue when you feel ready, and who knows who might be waiting for you there? I always think the guinea finds you, not the other way round, we think we are in control, but we aren't!!!!

PS Yes, it was really lovely of the vet to contact you, what a nice thing to do. X
