Ds 8 bought his first hamster from Pets at Home last night-reassure me please!!!!

Started a thread on chat as worried that he is ok(ds chose the runt I think).

Now slightly worried after the Watchdog prog that he'll be ok. There is a vet attached to ours and the staff seem v knowledgable. We've got a free vet check up in a week.

our local PaH is very good, the staff are very attentive and knowledgable

Just keep a close eye.
Put him.in a quiet place and leave him be for a few days. Let him get used to his new home and surroundings.
There's a few threads in here to have a browse through and hamsterfanaticforum.co.uk is fable for info.

I personally would.not go near P@H if i was paid, but many people have long living animals from there.

Re water, they drink very little. It will take him a while to settle.

Pop a tiny piece if carrot or cucumber somewhere in his cage. It will be a nice treat for hint and encourage him to scuffle round. They also lurve mealworms!!

Once he is braver then try bath taming. Get in a dry bag with hammy and let him run over you.

Yout can train hammys to wake up for a while late afternoon. Tap lightly on their cage and then feed/water change. Eventually you will fond they will be waiting for you. Good if you have dcs.
My old girl used to get up at 5 and then sleep at 8 then get up midnight ish and be up all night.

And I cannot recommend the Karlie wonderland wheels highly enough. They are silent apart from pattering feet! Well worth the money!!!

On the good side re Pets at Home at least said hamster is in a good home now.

Ds is just sitting by his cage.We've heard what I think is nibbling but nothing else.His hut is a wooden bark type so we can't see him.Still no sight of him,getting worried.Ds is too.Don't want to disturb him though.

Praying he hasn't got wet tail as we'll have to get rid of the v expensive Leon cage ds spent all his money on-it has wooden floors,will be impossible to disinfect.

Just give him time, he will come out when he's ready . If you are really worried then pop his house off and have a peak but put it straight back. You may find he might cone out to.investigate. Or pop him in a quiet dark room and spy

Re the wood floors, buy some plastikote. Brilliant stuff, non toxic and once coated the wood will stay nice and will very wipe down. May also be worth doing the wheel if your boy is anything like mine and pees whilst running . They sell it on amazon and do all sorts of colours as well as clear!
It has saved.ne a fortune!

So if the worst should happen could we scrub said wooden floors and plasticote them enough to ward off wet tail for the replacement.

Sorry to be sooo neg but ds 's bday is next Tuesday so will need some kind of a plan should the worst happen(praying not).

I would.plastikote them anyway. You can't get wooden floors completely clean. Everything just soaks in. My girl was ok with wood but I still had to replace every now and again. My boy has everything plastic, apart from the wheel because he literally pees as get walks !

But yes providing you gave them a good soak and let them dry then it should be fine.

When Harry the Hamster died we brought another from PAH she then died two days later (wet tail thingy) via the vet, PAH reimbursed all costs and replaced her with a boy called nibbles, nibbles is fine and about 1.5 years old now :)
