Getting a house rabbit (I think!) tell me everything?

I have been offered a house rabbit by a friend who can no longer give it the time it needs ideally. The rabbit will be a pet for my DS, who is 11, after his second hamster recently died of old age. Sad He took care of the hamster himself, with supervision and always remembered to give it food/water, with occasional nagging reminding to clean out...

The rabbit comes with a two storey indoor cage and an outdoor run for nice days. It currently spends all day in it's cage and is out and about in the evenings. I am planning for DS to have the rabbit in his (large) bedroom and it will need to stay in it's cage until after school, when he can let it out as he spends a lot of time in his room. (eg, we can barely drag him out of it.... Blush ) He knows how to handle animals and be gentle/not maul them etc and we will make sure electric cables aren't accessable.

Anything else I need to know? The rabbit is neutered, but what other day to day care should they have? Any tips on diet/bedding etc?

We haven't had a rabbit before and I have no clue! Current owner is a vet nurse, so I am sure will be pretty good on advice, but I want to know as much as possible.

Mysister had a pet house rabbit, he was quite sociable, but she became horribly allergic to him being in the house - plus the hay bedding etc made her poorly, so he ended up outside after a few months, poor chap. He also managed to chew through the fridge/dishwasher cable, nearly electrocuting himself - he got very bored and needed rabbit company really. Plus, these are naturally burrowing animals, so do need to be outside a fair bit.
