hi

I have a 4mth old rabbit who is keen on chewing the skurting boards, kids drawers, table legs and the wall! (alcove) Hmm

just recently she mangaged to get behind the kids tv and bit through their wii and playstation cables! .......2 very sad boys! :(

so, what can i offer the rabbit to chew on instead? i had natural woodland chewy thing hanging in her cage, she has a gnawing block, chew sticks - none of interest to her.

she has a cardboard box, plastic tunnel, few toys around.....

thanks in advance :)

Sods law is that you could by her the bestest ever rabbit chew toy and she will still prefer your table legs and wires Hmm

The only way I could stop chewing was to block of the things that were being chewed:
-Wires of the floor and tucked away
-Mesh around the table legs
-Or corner of a part of the room just for her with nothing but her bits in. Only let out when you can watch 24.7.

Good luck!

Also make sure she has hay to nibble all day!!!! The constant chewing of the hay helps to keep the teeth down :) may reduce chewing

I feel bad to laugh but I have been and still am in that situation!!!

Where do I start - surround sound system cable, phone line, lamp cable, Internet cable, skirting board, curtains, carpet (growing hole behind the sofa Wink), table legs, corner of the sofa (it's leather FFS), garden bench oh and various plants in the garden that have slowly withered a died!!!

Tbh, I think other than the suggestions to wire mesh/insulate things, its a lot of bunnies natural instinct to have a nibble on just about anything!

I ensure now that I keep a strict eye on the buns when they come in from the garden but no amount of toys, saying no, moving them out of the way makes any difference, they seem to have a radar that constantly drives them to eat the things they shouldn't Grin

the DC's wires were behind the chest of drawers (placed diagonal) in the corner of the bedroom with the cage one side and a piece of wood the other. she still managed to get behind it!!!!

the mesh around table legs is funny :) but i cant do any thing about the alcoves lol

she has the DS's bedroom to roam, landing and bathroom. in the evening i bring her downstairs for a while, when she likes to tuck into a bit of skurting and table Grin

there aint much space to keep her in one corner, can put a pen in the DS's room as they will have no space to play. maybe i can fit one in DD's room - she doesnt really spend any time in there.

I do put hay in her cage, she doesnt spend much time chewing on it - her cage door is open so she can hop in if she fancies a chew :)

thanks for your time to reply

I think i will have to buy a pen and have set times on when she comes out maybe? just dont like the thought of her stuck in a limited space....but then having to pay out for more wires and furniture Hmm ............

Meant to add (hit send too fast) pillows or cushions around precious items help as they struggle to move these (though may nibble at them).

Wish you luck - maybe try some 'treats' mine like the fruit shaped ones from PAH - sometimes make mine chill a little, well for a while anyway Wink

My previous house rabbit was a chewer but we trained her out of it. It takes a lot of time and monitoring. We got a spray bottle and sprayed her every time she chewed something she wasn't supposed to (with warm water) and then instantly offered her a chew toy - she soon got the message. Also get some of the plastic cable cover that you can wrap around the wires - they can't chew through that.

fernieB - thanks, have purchased some plastic cable cover since posting :)

I already had this on the spaghetti junction going on behind my tv cabinet (from when i had my pet rats Grin ) bit late for the kids computer wires tho lol :)
