Owl Babies.

Am hoping for some advice here. We have had two barn owls nesting in our attic (purpose built owl box) for months and months, maybe a year even. Yesterday we found one of them dead. We are really sad and are very concerned that there may be young in the nest and we have not seen the other owl about.

We have tried the RSPB and they said that they will only come out if we are certain that there are babies. I am not certain but think I may have heard them.

Does anyone know of anyone we can ring or a course of action we can take?

Thanks so much.

We had a similar type experience with a baby kestrel last year. In the end I contacted our local wildlife sanctuary Lower Moss Wood in Cheshire, and they came out and rescued the baby - they have also helped out with geese and other birds. If there isnt anywhere reasonably local, contact the local vets who may know of local folk who can help/put you in touch with. There are lots of Owl sanctuaries around and they may be able to put you in touch with the nearest one. Good luck.

Whereabouts are you? DS is a falconer and might be able to suggest the best people to ring.

Thanks everyone. Spent all morning yesterday on the phone, nobody will come out but there are places we can take the chicks if we can get to them.

DH has been to have a look. He can't see anything but the nest is difficult to see into. We didn't hear any noises last night so it's looking increasingly like both owls have gone and either there were no babies or they have died too.

It is just frustrating. I absolutely don't want to make the wrong call on this one and could really do with an expert to double check for us.

Hellhas, we are in Bolton area.

Thanks.

I'll text the boy in a minute to ask him if he knows anyone who can help.

They ^^ are excellent but very much not local to you! However, they probably know someone near you, or you could google for one closer?

We had a peregrine (with jessie) on our chimney, they guy came out and spent ages swinging a lure - damn thing flew off 30 seconds before he arrived!

The other people who might be able to help are the IBR, the Independent Bird Register. They are the place where all the falconers hang out. They have a helpline 0161 790 5613
