Weird guinea pig and field mouse question

We have two guinea pigs that live in a hutch outside , they are not the friendliest of beasts but seem quite happy with their lot in life .

However I have noticed in the last couple of days a sneaky little field mouse getting into the cage and knicking the food .

I don't really mind this but will the guinea pigs ?

So far whenever I have seen it the guineas have been upstairs and it has been down .

Do I carry on ignoring it or change the wire to a smaller size (hassle) so it can't get in ?

TIA

Physically, the GPs are at no threat from the mouse but mice pee and pooh everywhere (I had pet mice years ago. Male mouse pee stinks ).
Plus they might be carrying ticks, lice, fleas, mites, salmonella.

Mice can get through the tiniest of spaces- I've read that they can fit through a space the size of a pencil Hmm

Problem is ,if you have mice in the cage you could get rats.

I wouldn't fancy pitting my hogs against a rat TBH.

(You need smaller wire Grin )

Bugger , I was afraid you would say that . The mouse is very cute , I feel bad evicting him , I will get over it , especially thinking about bloody rats

It's not good news if wild mice and rats come into contact with guinea pigs. Yes, they carry diseases through their urine and you could end up with a couple of very poorly guinea pigs in no time. It sounds like you need to invest in a much more sturdy enclosure. If you move your piggies indoors, the mice won't get to them and they'll become alot more friendly! :)

I had a mouse in the gargage where the girlies' hutch was. Like you OP I found a mouse sitting in the hutch. Also found droppings everywhere including in their dry food bag.

Had to move hutch out of gargage and now keep hay and dry food in house. Mice can pass on disease.
