My rat Bella who lives with my other rat. they are both about 6months. I got them for my birthday from a lady who couldnt look after them any more! any way Bella is very skinny and has crusty bits around her eyes. my mum who has had quite a lot of rats in her time. says that I should just feed her up and keep the nosie down. she also said don't take her to the vets because they wont do any thing. what do I do???! please help! xx

Personally I'd clean her eyes with a little cotton wool and some cooled boiled water just to make her more comfortable. As you say she is skinny I'd take her to the vet just to be sure she is ok but if you do clean her eyes let the vet know.

It is ok to over rule your mum, despite her having experience. My family have had cats for years and despite her telling me at times not to worry about going to the vet, if my gut tells me to take them then I will (the last time we disagreed was when my little girl cat was dribbling everywhere despite having had easily digestible food - she ended up on a medicated paste). They are your babies and you know best!

I'd take her, just to be on the safe side. Our vet is ace and really knows her rats (not all vets are!) and it's good for peace of mind. Maybe give her some high value treats (cheese, egg, meat) to feed her up a bit?
