I wear long black gym trews or knee length lycra leggings and a tee shirt

I tried to run with normal sweat pants in the beginning, and fell twice on my face as my feet got tangled in them. Now I wear long black running pants (leggings, in effect). T-shirt + long sweatshirt on top.

I wear a t-shirt (usually a base layer one so don't feel too sweaty) and capri type sweat pants (available from Sainsburys). plus very very heavy duty bra, trainers and socks.

Shock Absorber "Run" bras are brilliant.

Running leggings/tights

T shirt

Good sports bra

Running socks

Have reflective bright yellow jacket for running in the evening/winter/rain

Proper trainers (i.e fitted at a specialist shop who can do gait anlysis and advise you - not the spotty 16 year olds at JJB etc)

I can't run without an ipod and suitably inspirational music.

Wow, so many runners, thanks everyone.

I had a nasty feeling you'd all say "leggings", I had toyed with the idea of joggers but I knew it was wrong.

I haven't run for about 15 years, leggings held no fear for me back then.

I need a trip to a sports shop, we've only got JJB type sports shops locally, I'm quite close to Sheffield, if anyone can recommend a shop for running shoes around there or Meadowhall?

Is Decathlon any good?

There's one in Sheffield and Nottingham, so not too bad to get to.

Lycra cropped leggings and vest (wicking fabric) from m & s (they do larger sizes and are cheaper than proper running brands) I thought I would feel self concious as I'm size 18 and the clothes are close fitting, but in fact I feel more like a proper runner

been to this chain in Manchester

Leggings are no worse that joggers. Joggers are made of nasty bulky material. You will be grand in leggings. Was in Decathlon yesterday and they have a load of running gear in. There own make is very good value. I got myself one of those things to strap your IPod to your arm in sexy neoprene for a fiver... I wish my husband would wear more neoprene...

Sweatshop is good too. Once you have had your gait analysis done and worked out the extent of your issues. Me a moderate/extreme overpronator you can buy them from MandM direct.... So look for the words in the description and they are half the price

Though my runners are size 9.5 compared to size 7.5 normally. So would recommend getting properly fitted.

Agree suggy - I always buy bigger or you get that painful pressure on your toe.

On a related issue why are men and women's shoes different? Is there a sensible reason or is it just that they think women like peach and pink ?

yy get the lycra on your legs, so much more comfortable

and it makes me run faster when I go past people so they don't get too much time with a close-up rear view

I also wear wicking top but put a looser vest over it because I look absurd clad all and only in lycra

I think a headband is indispensable too but that may just be because my hair is a bit unruly and any number of bands and clips won't keep it down

Aquavit - what do you wear in the summer on your head? I suffer from Huw Grant floppy hair and have a neoprene headband and a hat for winter. But usually bottle summer running in case someone spots me...

Lots of great tips, thanks everyone, looks like a trip to Meadowhall is in order.

I'll be brave and go for some lycra

suggy I either wear the same wicking headband that I use in winter (sweaty betty, it's v good) or a very lightweight bandana tied over my head - keeps the hair and sweat at bay AND protects from the sun. I find a cap too hot and heavy.

It's not very stylish, I must confess. But I can't really aspire to stylish when I'm running.

sweatshop are fantastic, agree on getting your feet and run style analysed so you get the shoes to suit you, it can lead to injury if you don;t have the correct support

aldi have offers on running gear at the moment, SO cheap check out the running capri pants, headphones and run jackets

good supportive run bra ( I am small of nork and find this suits very well they do a reasonable range though I know shock absorber are supposed to be the bees knees of sports bras

I always run with one of these a wicking run vest and capri lycra leggings (even in rain)
Good luck

I wear running tights, running top, zip up thingey I got from cycling shop.

TK Maxx can be good for cheap stuff but you have to rummage. Mostly I buy online, got running tights and tops from Next. Good because you can try lots on and return easily.

I wear a baseball cap thingey to disguise the mess that is my hair and to keep rain out of my eyes.
