what colour tights should i have worn?

denim skirt (quite short), chocolate brown boots, plain top in winter white/cream colour, brown/cream/aqua mix jewellery. When i tried the outfit on last night (the top and jewellery are new) I had bare legs and it looked good (even if i do say so myself ). I wore it with brown 50 denier tights though and it didn't look anywhere near as good. Should I have gone for a contrast (picked out the aqua from the jewellery) or could i have worn cream thick tights?

ladygaggia - it's difficult to tell from the pictures but I'm going to Selfridges/John Lewis on tuesday so I'll look out for some there and have a try on.
Clure - I hadn't considered navy - i'll have a look and see if I have some and try.
