The Curly Girl Method

I want to thank whoever it was that mentioned this method in a thread a while back. I googled it and have started the no-poo method, it has absolutely transformed my hair. So thankyou, thankyou, thankyou whoever you were.

Really? How are you doing it?
I bought the Curly Girl book and could not get on with it at all. My hair never felt clean and if I styled it like it said to (with gel, clip it until dry) it just looked dirty and flat.

I want to know your secret to bouncy curls!

Going out in the rain sometimes works for me...curling rags give it the poodle look and deprives me of sleep so I look dreadful anyway. I want to know how you do this!

I haven't read the book, but have been taking advice from another forum for curly hair. I wash with conditioner (Original source) and then condition (Original source). I brush my hair through with a denman D3 (recommended on the forum) through conditioner. Then I plop can't get over finding the word plopping funny Then I put my styling stuff on and diffuse. As far as I know I am not using any of the 'cones, sulphates and other things that aren't good for us curlies. I've only been doing it for a few washes so praying it doesn't suddenly turn into a greaseball.... Some people use a shampoo once in a while though, which I may do.

Ok, what's a denman D3?! And plopping?! I don't remember that from the book.
What do you use to style?

Sorry, don't mean to interrogate you, I'm just intrigued as to how people actually make this work as it went so horribly wrong for me!

It's working out really well for me- just following the book. My hair looks fantastic in comparison to a few weeks ago, and I must be saving a fortune!

I want to know all about this 'no poo' method too. I've heard it mentioned on here and am most intrigued but I'm not sure about buying and reading a whole book about styling my hair!

I shall link you all to the site I stumbled across, these women are now becoming my hair gurus (tired and confused of the plural of guru.. Guri.. Gurues.. oh what the heck I have lovely curly hair I don't care if I can't spell )

presumably this is some sort of cult hair technique for those with already, naturally curly hair. Not those with straight hair who want curls ?

The book is only £5.99 though- and you will save that in shampoo and serum in a month!

Of course you need some wave/curl in your hair already. I can see some of you need proof... so hands up who wants to see my hair diary, oh yes I am that interesting that I take pictures of my hair.

I have VERY curly hair, I don't have pic on my profile atm but see my son's hair at the top - mine is curlier.

What really works for me is:

  1. Not washing it too much
  2. Untangling with my fingers with conditioner on
  3. Never blow drying
  4. Using conditioner as a 'gel' (I use herbal essences).

Could anyone give me a brief run down of what to buy, please? I haven't seen any of the brands mentioned in the shops...I'd really like to try silicone free shampoo, even though I just have wavy hair rather than curly.

Thanks for the link btw!

Just had a look at that site and it looks complicated! How do you start? I currently have to wash my hair every day as it looks crap in the mornings so at the moment, I use shampoo, conditioner, serum, mousse and styling creme every day. Not suprisingly, it costs a fortune!

Wow never knew as a life long curly that there was a 'curly bible' lol

I do a mixture of straightening and leaving it au natural but its always a bit hit and miss on the curly days.

As Jumente said I would love to know if there any high street products that can be used

Look at the forum I've started with using Orignal Source conditioners (available in Boots, supermarkets) I was advised before I started to shampoo with a sulphate shampoo to wash out any 'cones that may have been in products I currently used. I used Aussie Miracle Moist shampoo.

Heres my Hair Diary so far, I think just two conditioner washes have made a big difference, even my oh noticed it was curlier .

What are you using to style? Your hair looks great, it actually looks very similar to mine (although in better condition!)

So, if I wanted to try again, I should wash with normal shampoo (I use Aussie Mega Shampoo), then condition and style with curl-friendly prodcuts, then just do that co-washing malarky from then on?

You have beautiful hair op, I am watching this with interest, my hair has gone the other way, super curly pre-kids and now just wavy, but gets very frizzy.

Please explain what 'plopped' means, I can't find an explanation on the site you linked to and it's bugging me.

Why thankyou for all the compliments

Being a beginner at all this and tired beyond belief so really couldn't be arsed to take a long list of ingredients to avoid to the shops I chose my current products by copying conditioners others used on the afore mentioned forum making a scientific based decision whilst reading about conditioners others found successful.

I use Original Source Pear and Avocado to wash with and Tea Tree and Mint conditioner to condition with. Seems to be working.

luckily the gel I already use (Umberto Giannini Scrunching Jelly) apparently was free of any of the things I should be avoiding so carried on with that. (As you can tell I am being very scientific and doing alot of research into how i'm choosing things ) Maybe I just luckily picked products suited to my hair. Garnier Repair and shine seems a popular choice too, cheap, easy to find, that may be my next hair experiment.

Here's a guide to plopping I haven't bought some expensive towel thingy though, I just use a tshirt, apparently creates the same results.

Hey, I've used the Scrunching Jelly and it really is very good. Not sure why I stopped using it now...
Thanks for posting about your products. They look much more feasible than the ones on the British Curlies site.
Am very excited about plopping!
