Help -I've had my long hair cut and I cant style it !!

I've always had very long hair since childhood and 2 days ago decided I'd go for a change and have it cut. I asked the hairdresser to do what he thought would suit me best. He did a short bob which is slightly raised at the back with layering. It looked really nice and I was very pleased. The problem is I've now washed it and I cant get itto look how the hairdresser did it, in fact it looks awful. How do you get it to go streight and turned under at the bottum? I've never had to style my own hair before and havn't realy got a clue. I've just bought a round brush like the hairdresser used so I'll have a go with that. I'd be really greatful for any tips or advice as I'm realy starting to regret having it done.

buy some hair straighteners - they will smooth, straighten and curl under for you after you've dried it - my hair (same cut as yours) looks like a frizzy wavy mess until I've got the GHD's on it!

hair products help. don't know much about the. i use kerastase oto-relax on my hair when it is wet and that helps. also a tiny amount of label.m frizz control serum once it is dried. (the former has lasted me 2 yrs and the latter still going after 4 months).

could be worth asking your hairdresser which they used to help style it.

I've got a similar hair cut and I spray in a bit of styling stuff round the ends of the hair. The I put the top of my hair up in a clip so can dry underneath bit. I go all round it in sections wrapping the ends round the brush and rolling it up and then drying that bit and moving round til it's all done. Obviously the bits round the back are the hardest. Then I take the hair out of the clip and do the same wrapping the ends round the brush thing, but doing it a little straighter. It should all fall in to place then!! And you can work out the best way to get the fringey front bit right. Once you get good at it, you can kind of pull the brush down hard on the hair as you are drying it and it straightens it at the same time as you are curling the ends under.

Sounds like you have a similar hairstyle to me.

I alternate between applying a tiny amount of GHD smoothing balm (has an odd smell on hands but doens't linger in the hair ) or John Frieda Frizzease to damp hair.

Then I use an hot-air styler to get the slight curl and volume and then quickly use straighteners on the under layers of my bangs and the outer-layers at the back (I don't like the over-straightened, afghan hound look). Sometimes I use the tiniest amount of Paul Mitchell smoothing gloss drops at the end that gets rid of the fine fly-away hair.

I also have a hairdryer with an attachment which gives you straightened hair and, if you tip your head down as you dry it, gives a lot of volume but it looks a bit more tousled ifywim.

Thanks everyone, I'll give it a try. If I still cant get the hang of it I'll ask the hairdresser to show me.

Oh Lord - this is why I haven't had my long hair cut - but I really do hate my long hair now. I'm too old to have it down, so I normally just pull it back in a scrunchie and it makes me look as if I don't care!

It is worth having it cut but when you've never had to style it before, it comes as a bit of a shock. I'll get the hang of ot soon I hope. I think if I'd gon for a more sholder length style with layers, I could chose to do it nicely or just tie it back. This would be easier.
