OK, meeting minor royal and press next week - what on earth do I wear?

Dd (aged 3) and I have been asked to go to an opening of a new building attended by a minor royal (not that I'm fussed about them, but it gives you an idea of the event); local press will be there, and possibly (but unlikely) national, so best not go looking like sack of spuds. But what do I wear? The invite states 'business' dress (ie. suits for men). Can I get away with black trousers, or should I go with (dull I know) wrap dress? What about dd? Most of the time I can't persuade her out of pink jogging bottoms, and her skirts are mostly cord, worn with long-sleeved t-shirt tops. She only has one pair of shoes (boots, into which her orthotics fit) and I really don't want to get her a 'dressy' pair as they'll never be worn again. Don't really want to buy new outfits, but would welcome any suggestions. Thank you!

Hello - have done a couple of theese dos (but have never had the dc in tow!) We had the 'skirt is preferable but you cant not wear trousers approch' = ie think they rather females wear skirt etc, but trousers will be ok - the first one I did it was a smart skirt suit and blouse, the second, dress and jacket (was summer) - depends how minor they are too - some of th every minor ones are not that smat themselevs tbh! (although the couple I met were lovely, and very human!) As far asyour dd goes - its a lt less frmal for children, though obviously jeans and trainers probably not agood look! (Would have thought a skirt and boots would be fine perhaps with a nie top/ jumper and coat - will you be outside - can hide allsorts under a coat.. (am presuming neither of you are being presented or presenting flowers etc?!) Hope it goes well - its really nice to be involved in these things!

I wore trouser suit to meet senior royal, was fine. That was at work though. I'd probably go with the dress for you.

Surely your DD should wear whatever she feels nice and relaxed in. Why on earth not? Cord skirt & boots sounds lovely. Maybe take a clean top for her just in case.

Thank you for your replies. Lol at cod's! Maybe a t-shirt with 'Republic' on it for dd? Perhaps I will go for a wrap dress. I usually live in trousers, so it will be a departure from that, if nothing else.
