Should a MAN Colour his Hair....yes or no?!!!

My dh has lots of grey hair which I hate, and he feels rather self conscious about it in case other kids taunt our kids about their 'old and grey' daddy at school.

Our mobile hairdresser refuses to colour his hair though, insisting that mens' hair doesn't 'take' the colour like a woman's hair does?

Does anybody have experience of this, or is it that this particular hairdresser is reluctant for some other reason?

Should we listen to her or find another hairdresser instead?

Your views would be very much appreciated, thanks.

I tend to notice men who colour their hair because their hair never seems to look natural, so maybe the hairdresser is right? Can't really say if she is but surely the children at school won't notice?

Also, once you start colouring it never stops so it may turn out to be an expensive decision.

You could get a second hairdressing opinion though, I am sure someone on here will know for sure!

No - don';t lethim colour it. My DH is grey too - we just call him the silver fox and he likes that!

...and men who have highlights, there is NO excuse for such unnecessary poofification.

I like grey hair on men.

Men's hair is more coarse than women's (as a rule) and so the colour doesn't tend to look as natural on a bloke as it does on a woman.

When you ladies say that your dh's or dp's hair are also turning grey....how old are they?
Sorry, silly question I know, but was just wondering as some people's hair turns grey very young, while others get away with it for a long time.

Absolutely not - grey hair looks much nicer on men than hair that is dyed (witness the nut brown barnet of Sir Paul McCartney)

It doesn't take differently, that's rubbish, it just looks odd

Come to think, hair colouring rarely looks natural on women either (unless maybe they've spent an absolute fortune) - but we're used to it on women. Sort of like make-up really.

My 53yo BIL1 dyes his hair. He denies it with a passion but he has deffo been at the Just For Men. It is bootpolish black all over. V V funny. He looks a bit like Pierce (?) Brosnan so it's not like he would be repulsive with a bit of 'salt and pepper' going on.

TellusMater....as you had grey hair at 16 and your dh at a young age as well.....have either of you just left it as nature intended - or have you thrown on a bit of colour as well!!!????
I have gone greyer and greyer since having children, and have coloured my hair so many different colours, I am not quite sure what its natural colour would be any more!!

My dp's grey hairs have been increasing since I met him, so since his early 20s... I really like it. I am only slightly worried that I may be the cause of this

Definitely not. I like grey hair too. My DP doesn't have any grey yet but I won't be bothered when he does turn grey. I think it's quite sexy. George Clooney is a God

eek..............what am i gonna do - grey hair goes through me.....actually, without saying too much on here,I think it has psychological roots as there were grey haired bs involved in my childhood...and I suppose it can only be due to that?
dh doesn't like it either, but that could be due to what i've told him over the years though? Just don't know?

plus somebody commented other day in local store,that he was 'grandad' to our children.....that really bothers him iyswim...surely it must be due to his grey hair??

I dye mine. Or at least I have it dyed. I couldn't go grey at 16, and am now in the habit. I sometimes think about going au naturel, especially when my white stripe appears after a few weeks, but it would be such a big change all of a sudden.

Dh wouldn't dream of dyeing his. I am laughing at the thought of his reaction. A hairdresser blow-dried his hair once and he was utterly mortified. He won't go further than slapping on a bit of gel...
